"LOOKS LIKE NEW!"

I've always kept my car clean, washed, and waxed so I'm not exactly a rookie detailer, however only recently have I begun working with polish, glazes, and sealants that really make the car POP.

Now that I'm more into it, I've noticed something that really bugs me. I've even seen it on this board. Maybe I'm just over sensitive but I want to know what everyone else thinks.

I did both of my cars this weekend and my neighbor saw me. Besides the usual bonehead remark of "Are you gonna do my car next?" which pisses me off enough, he looked at my car and said "Wow, it looks brand new"

Like I said, I've seen people say that in these forums so I'm probably just being over sensitive. But I couldn't help but think to myself "Screw you buddy! As if those monkeys at the dealership ever made a car look this good!"

I know he meant it as a compliment, but I really felt that the car looked BETTER than new, and his remark really took me down a peg.

I wouldn't take offense to that remark. Yeah, dealerships leave much to be desired in prepping their cars, but I'd still take the remark "it looks like new" as a compliment. I think most people don't look at finishes under halogens to see the true difference between a dealer prepped car and an autopian prepped car.

I've always taken the phrase "looks like new" to refer to a flawless finish, not neccessarily a dealer-prepped finish.

On another note, I traded in my year-old MX-5 last weekend. It ended up being the cleanest, nicest, newest-looking MX-5 on the lot, even when parked right next to brand new ones. Maybe the dealer will catch a clue. :chuckle:

I'm not mad at the guy. I know it was a compliment and I took it that way.

He doesn't know any better. But if an autopian said my car looked new, I'd probably light his face on fire and put it out with a hammer.

Lighten up - he's paying you the highest of compliments that he could possibly know and you're offended?

Not long ago I detailed my Mother-in-laws 10 year old car and she said the same thing and I was happy.

If I had a dollar for everytime I heard that when working...

But in regards to the topic at hand, don't take it the wrong way. I agree with you in that the monkeys at the dealership (My salesman got a good kick out of that term) do more harm than good.

The way *I* think about it is how a car looks after it's rolled off the assembly line. Interpret *that* as *new* and I think you will feel a bit better.

Lastly, you are at the right place. Many of us have these feelings :).
