Looking to try somthing beside Meguiars

I have a very red 06 VW MkV GTI that has had nothing but Meguiar’s, and the latest product mix is NXT as a base coat with #26 as the FTC. Winter is coming and it is time to strip things down and rebuild but I want to use a sealant that can be layered which means one with no cleaners in it.

I wash my GTI weekly, apply a new coat of #26 every 4-6 weeks, and a new coat of NXT every 10-12 week followed by a coat of #26. I keep my finish clear of bonded contaminates and now here are some questions, and a statement of two.

1) When I clean off the old protection how do I know that I have gotten rid of everything because the prep is key!

2) I have some very fine swirl from washing to is I use Sonus do I need to use SFX-1, 2 & 3 or could I just start with 2?

3) I’m deciding between Klasse High Gloss Sealant and Ultima Paint Guard Plus, and because this is not a manufacturer sponsored site, and both of these can be acquired from Autopia your opinions should not be tainted.

4) I have a variety of Meguiar’s products at home including their pad system and depending on the type of sealant selected should these pads be swapped out to a different supplier?

5) I drive my GTI to work everyday, and I’m looking for a high gloss shine that is durable enough to handle the daily drive. When parked at work I make use of a custom car cover for my GTI and is only not used when it rains.

Your input on the product mentioned above would be greatly appreciated.

You didn't ask about Zaino, for a DD it's tough to beat as the shine lasts much longer than carnuba wax in my opinion. If you're looking for something to try that's a wax from autopia, then maybe you can try Pinnacle or PS 21, both are pretty good.

I was planning to use a sealant first, may be to coats, followed by something like PS21 as the final top coat. But I wanted to use product that don't have a cleaner component in them.

I just put on 1Z Glanz Wax (new formula) and have been very pleased with it. I prefer it over the older formula. Two coats seem to be the magic number for it. Very glossy, but still has some warmth to it from the added carnauba. Makes my red and dark blue metallics pop.

I was planing on topping it with a pure carnauba wax, but it looked good on it's own. Might still do it just to see. If my camera was in any kind of working order I'd post a pic.

Sorry I don't have any info on the other questions you asked, but as far as knowing when you stripped all the old wax, I think if you just take your time with it and do a thorough job (if you do it via machine or chemical) you shouldn't have a problem. Some say if the surface squeaks, the wax is no longer present. However, I think I've read that that isn't always the case.

Good luck in your search.

You are trying to move away from a very good looking combo. #21 might make for a slightly better base but in reality, if you are honest with yourself, nothing will look that much better. For protection, maybe #16 if you can find it or one of the collinites.

I agree Zaino has a nice shine.

Once again I'm risking getting attacked by Zainoites, but...

There are much better sealants out there. Zaino does look nice, and has very good durablity, but it allows contaminants to pass through it and adhere/bond with the clear coat way too easily.

An LSP should protect as good as it looks.

^^ I have not experienced that just yet.

+1

Nice VW! #26 Looks great on red, so it will be tough to beat in looks, but as far as

durability you have some options. FK Pink Wax is a bit more durable than #26 (IME) and

is also good looking.

Zaino ZAIO/z5/Z8 is also a good combo on red.

Uhh... What he said... :chuckle:

But honestly, for LSP try collinite 915 or jetseal109. And for prep, go with optimum or menzerna.

I'm not turning away from Maguiar's and I have to agree with NSXTASY,#26 Looks great on red but I'm an software engineer by trade and I have to wonder is there something better out there? I do not mind having to apply a new top coat every 8-10 weeks but is there a better base cost to make my red POP!

Bonded containments is nto an issue as I clay my GTI at least 3 times a year, and wash it using a two bucket system every week, rain or shine!

I started with Meguiar’s because of Chip Foose, and while I am happy with the results I want to layer my protection but can’t using their product because NXT, #20, and # 21 all have cleaners in them which defeats the plus side of layers.

I have heard of Zaino and the results I have seen are great, I have also some minor experience with Klasse AIO and also like the end result.

What I am looking for is a sealant that will last for at least 6 months but I would like to last a year, and then a top coat combination that will stand up to my daily drive across the bay, the idiots on US 101, and the dirt haulers that are always dropping CRAP!

I don’t want much, just everything but is that to much to ask for baby in the driveway?

I will ‘Do some research’ as Macruz19 suggests, KEEP THE FEEDBACK COMING ITS ALL GOOD!

Oh, I still use megs stuff still on my car. Excellent brand with variety, but I had no luck with their wax or sealants. For some reason it can't handle Florida downpours.

Yeah just research on here, there's lots of topics and hopefully you'll find a new great product for your car. :woot:

I have a hard time believing that if someone applies 10 coats of Zaino, that they are building up more protection than someone with 2 coats of Zaino. I don't think this "layering" thing has ever really been proven. Even without cleaners in it, I just don't think that any product out there is going to just keep building up more and more protection as you keep piling on more coats. I think once you pass 2 coats, you're just wasting your time, it's not doing anything.

IME, layering increases durability and aesthetics, not only with Zaino, but with Ultima and Klasse SG. I'm not sure any method has been "proven", scientifically speaking. I've found that 6 coats of Z2 is more durable than 2 of Z2. Similar finding with Klasse Sg, and with Ultima 3 looks better than 1, durability is still undetermined.

IMHO the cleaning abilities of meg's NXT, #20, #21 tend to get overblown when discussing layering. The amount and strength of cleaners is very low and is more to ensure a clean surface for optimum bonding, any serious cleaning/defect removal should already have been completed. Using a soft foam applicator by hand with light pressure will layer these products without removing much if any of the preceding layer.
