Looking for a new toy

My vote goes to the ZL1. They are making 3000 of them this year just to see how they take off, and next year they are making an unlimited number if all goes well. With the way Chevy has been they will probably produce more than that this year. They said only 60k Camaros would be made for the 2010 year. It ended up over 100k. I was one of the very first with the new ones. I got mine July 25, 2009. My dealer didn't charge me anything over sticker either. I got lucky and found a great dealer to deal with. They weren't charging over on zr1s either. It is owned by a nice guy and top notch cs. I say search through the dealers, they will all fight for your business. That's what I did and I got $3500 below sticker when I got my Camaro. :D if you need any info on the Camaros just let me know. I'm always around.

I can just say any more I will
NOT buy something that will depreciate in value vrs. something that will. No new cars for me. Played that game and lost too much.

I have never paid above MSRP in my life, even though I've come across many greedy crooks. IMO if you do that you'll never recoup your money. This year's hotness if usually next year's ho humness.

This is another important point.

While the new ZL1 looks amazing and is obviously an animal, you are going to take a huge hit on it. It doesn't matter how many are built or how fast it is, something will come out faster, cooler, and in more limited numbers.

Look at the early ZR-1 Covettes (circa 1990-1995). They stickered for 60-70k new, some people paid over 100k for the 1990 model. At the time the press thought nothing faster or better could ever be built. The last couple of years saw them produced in small numbers (448 I think for the 93,94, and 95). Yet you pick them up all day long for 20-30k. Why, because in the modern world 405 hp isn't that much and you are left with a rare engine that is almost impossible to find parts for.

The 308/328's are going to go up in value, and have been the only sub 200k older Ferrari that have really bucked the downward trend in value you dropping.

Spend 40-50 k on a 328 and in 5 years you be able to sell if for atleast what you have in it, maybe a lot more.

Zl1 if you go that route might as well just wait for the new gt500. I personally say get the new boss 302. My mom has the new SS Camaro top of the line and I drove it and compared to the new 5.0 does not have quite the pickup a 5.0 has

I can't agree more. I have no toy because one I have the the ability to drive amazing vehicles and B I have not decided on a non depreciating vehicle yet. The 3 Series Ferraris are great entry level investment cars providing you get a good one. New will always loose. Just do research my clients do quite well on their investments, of course we are talking in the 250k+ range but they started some where. I myself have lost alot of money passing up on deals I was worried about maintenance. I could have made over 200k just holding and selling a couple cars I passed on.

That's something I'd never be able to do.... I can't buy a car and just let it sit, I'd want to be driving it a lot.

Oh I could never let a vehicle sit. The concrete stays put just fine it doesn't need something to hold it down.:D

Rocket; Have you thought of older Porsches 70-late 80? Certain ones have leveled off and are going up. There are quite a few good deals out there. It takes a little reasearch to know what models had some engine flaws or prone to extra maintenance engine wise. Overall they are pretty much bullet proof. The design didn't change much so body panels and parts are widely availible.(another thing to consider with any vintage vehicle)

Also joining a club with the marque you are interested in will give you great info and good leads to the better vehicles/models. As they say "The very good ones trade hands privately to people in the know."

I wouldn't mind an old 911. I really need to do some serious research on some makes and models to see what I could afford and what I might like.

996's are undervalued, cheaper than the older 993's, and very capable as a daily driver. If you're a DIY'er, they're also pretty decent. Lots of knowledge and how-to's out there. Not saying it's an investment, but if you plan to thrash something daily they'll depreciate minimally and probably be cheaper to run.

another idea -- the cheapest car I ever owned was a 1991 Nsx... bought and sold for same price 5 years later, and maintenance was only maybe $2k during that period.

Whatever I get it sure won't be a daily driver. I have my truck for that. The TA I have now isn't a daily driver and it doesn't get much mileage put on it in a year either.

Try watching the upcoming Barrett Jackson auctions. If there isn't something on there that catches your eye then we will have to check your vitals to see if you are still breathing. I 've gone to a few in AZ. and Fl. and I would be hard stretched to find a type of car that wasn't represented there. Maybe it will give you a idea or two. The auction prices are a little salty and kind of represent the higher end of any given market but kind of let you get a feel for the current values. Just an old mans 2 cents.

I forgot about the NXS's another great option. Wellbalanced and sexy looks. Also they are holding in value and very reliable.

I'm crying as I post this. I miss that car....

Not too many $30k cars look that good parked next to a Gallardo. Just sayin'....

If you debadged a NSX a lot of people would never know it's a Acura. They have really held their value.

I didn't even think about an NSX but I did a little looking and found a few in my area. I'll look more on line.

When my brother saw I was looking them up he asked what kind of car it was and was it new. It goes to show how well designed and timeless their styling is.
