Looking for a good DA Finishing Polish

Hey guys,

This is my second post, I just introduced myself in another thread

http://www.autopia.org/forum/welcome-greeting-center/143503-bit-bullet-hello-pians.html#post1527626

Anyways, I have a question. I am about to order some UNO and Advanced Polish because I am about out of my current compound that I bough a few years ago. I am currently using Speed after my compounding. I like speed but I don't like the fact that it is a polish and protectant in one. The protection doesn't last and I wonder about it reacting to whatever LSP I choose to use. (XXX, Poxy, OS). So I am going to be switching to just a polish.

My question is, how well does Advanced Polish finish on most types of paint. I mainly maintain my families vehicles which all have pretty straight forward paint. However, I do occasionally do a few jobs.

Do I need to add a finishing polish. I have read where ALOT of people like the Mezerna polishes (85rd and 106fa). Do I need one of these or does Advanced Polish typically leave a slick mar free LSP ready finish in most cases?

I was considering these:

85rd

106fa

Blackfire SRC finishing polish

Optimum final

and 3m Superfine

I rarely use my rotary because it is just a HF model and it liked to bog and skip, I primarily use my PC 7424xp and I have a cheap HF DA with a 3" backingplate on it for pillars and things.

So consider that I use a DA action %99 of the time.

Thanks,

Scott

D301 has Carnuba in it, I was wanting a polishing agent that doesn't leave protection behind it.

HD Polish is all you'll likely need.

HD Polish. Anything else we can help you with? :bounce:

Welcome to Autopia!

I thought HD Polish finished pretty darn well, I guess if I know I was going to be working on one I can get a bottle a few days in advance.

Thanks for the Welcome :usa

I'll add another vote for HD polish. I also like M205 and 85rd as well. But lately I have been able to do everything with HD Polish.

I think that just about sums it up....HD Polish ftw!

I've been a huge fan of 85rd / OHP / UF / 205 and all of them have their own little quirks, but I have yet seen anyone including myself experience anything bad with HD Polish.

If you like HD Speed, you'll love HD polish. With both, you can top them with HD Poxy without any ill effects.

I do like HD Speed and it was pretty shocking how well you can actually correct with HD Speed if its light swirls.

My biggest draw to the HD line is the fact that they are easy to work with and produce no dust. I really hate dust. Hah

Thanks for the feed back guys.

HD is good. PO85RD leaves a good finish also.

I was just a little confused as to weather to go with 106fa or PO85rd if I was to go the Mezerna route. Seems like plenty of people use the 106 on non-ceramiclear finishes, but from what I gather the 85rd is better on DA?

If I can get by with just the HD I am going to try that first and see where it gets me.

Another vote for HD Polish. There's no need to polish thru a "cycle" like Menzerna. When you get the finish you're looking for then stop. It cuts better than both 106 and 85 and it is much easier to wipe off. IMO, most consumers wouldn't be able to tell the difference if you used 85rd after HD.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing Menzerna, in fact I used 85rd on my last two details but they were both garage queens. Although if I had to choose to keep one finish polish out of my supply which includes 205, 106, 85, Perfect Finish and Ultrafina, it would be HD Polish.

I will admit the fact that you can stop working the HD products when you have reached the level of finish or correction you need without have to finish out the product it one of the reasons I have never tried anything Menzerna. My current compound is the Meg's 84 Power Cleaner and while it corrects fine I just don't care for it (my local shop was sold out of 105). Up until this point 105 and 84 have been the only compounds I have used. The Power Cleaner has a cycle that you speak of and I can't see what I am doing either. I am anxious to see if I can finish Uno down as well as some of the people I have seen on here because the Power Cleaner leaves alot to be cleaned up, but it is nothing that Speed can't handle when using a light cutting pad.

The vehicles in my family are maintained well enough that I can usually just use Speed if I need moderate cutting ability or my XMT #2 that came with my Porter Cable if it's very light (which has much less cut IME than Speed, and I'm ready for it to be gone), but I have had a few instances (especially my sisters black Altima) where I ended up having to make a few section passes over each spot to correct the paint as I was reluctant to break out the Meg's 84 as I felt I would have just been adding more work so it would have been nice to have had something like Uno in that case.

I have also picked up some EZ Creme glaze to start using on my personal car (for the car shows) before Poxy to just amp up the shine a little and make sure the surface is clean. I also was sucked into the Chemical Guys black hole of vague product descriptions and decided I wanted to try Blacklight as well. I am going to try that on my pops truck and see how well it last since it supposed to be a sealant/gloss enhancer.

Once it warms up a bit I will be posting pictures of these details and any feedback I gain.

Cheers

Yup, all of the old M8x line are diminishing abrasive liquids. I went through a ton of M80/83 back in the day.... they were, and still are good products in some cases. I still revert to them on single stage jobs occasionally; just depends on the mood I'm in, what the job needs, and how the particular finish responds on a given day.

HD is the rave right now and the reason is that it is good stuff. I use it. But don't forget about the time proven polish PO85RD.

HD Polish, Optimum Finish, and 3M Ultrafina are what I use for finishing polishes with the DA. And yes, Ultrafina will work fine with a DA but seems to be best with a polishing pad vs a finishing pad. HD Polish and Optimum Finish can be used with a polishing pad on harder paints, finishing pad on softer paints. HD has a little more clarity than OF or UF, the other two are a bit wetter. Of the 3, HD is the easiest to remove.

Thanks for the reply Scottwax, I had considered the Optimum Finish Polish as well as I have been really satisfied with all the OPT products I have tired. Funny because it was the first one I looked at and I forgot about it now.

I was originally planning on getting the 8oz just to have have in case I ended up needing something to step down again after initially polishing. I do detail a tiny bit on the side (read: max of 2 cars a month) and was afraid of not having something on hand if i needed it and the 8oz bottle is so cheap I figured why not. Then I started reading about all these finishing polishes and it seemed like the Menzerna polishes were the most preferred for the soft and ultra soft finishes. But other than that, it seems like the HD Polish finishes down and little to no micro marring left so unless it is one of these rare soft paints it would never be needed. Am I reading this correctly?

I've done a bunch of soft dark paints and I've never seen any marring when used with a black B&S flat foam pad.

Key's to a perfect finish:

**Clean your pad regularly (swap out 2/3 per vehicle)

**Firm pressure

**Don't overwork

**Don't overprime
