Lookie what Service King did!

I did a black Geo Tracker with exactly the same marks on the hood.

Before :

And after :

It took a PC with Diamond Cut and a Megs Maroon pad, plus about 3 passes to get all the marks out.

Finished with AIO and UPP.

Prolly take less time with a rotary.

No rotary here, but at least I know it can be done.

This car is going to get the treatment, clay, FCRC, Machine Polish (if needed), #7, 2x#26. It will be my first "hard core" detail. At least I have a PC now.......

Was the bumper repaired or just painted? The bubbling of the paint may have been caused by a release agent coming out of the bumper after being repaired. When the bumpers are molded at the factory they use a release agent so they pop out of the mold. The agent isn't an issue until you repair the bumper and grind into it for some reason. At that point it will seep out and screw up any new paint. ;)

Those swirls are pretty out of control, best of luck!!

It is the original bumper, it was first repaired when a guy in a 4-Runner backed into the car and damaged the bumper. No other body panels were hit. It started as a partial repaint with the whole bumper being cleared again, and it bubbled. Then the car went back to have the whole bumper stripped down and repainted, when he went to pick the car up, the paint had already started to bubble. Service King told my friend that if they didn't get it right this time, they would call in a "Paint Specialist". They got it looking good enough, and he was tired of having his car in the shop. I would think that the person mixing the paint and painting the car would be a "Paint Specialist". Go figure. :nixweiss

Smoker, that Geo Tracker is pretty impressive. Did you go right from Diamond Cut to AIO, or did you need something less agressive for hazing?

Meguiars makes good polshing agents I love meg's products.

I havent tried the diamond cut cleaner yet just DACP but I get Exelent Results with the DACP at 1200rpms.

Its acutally green. :D
Green? Is this a factory colour? It must be pretty rare then because I don't recall hearing about very many 3rd Gens this colour.... This makes it even worse. :(

Best of luck in repairing it.

Yep, it is factory, I haven't seen another 3rd gen in that color. I have seen some 4th gens that are about the same. If it helps, the car is a 1993, SOHC, auto, leather, Bose (no workey), blah blah, blah.

Thanks, I'll do a half and half of the hood on Friday evening, and post the pic. Saturday, I am doing the rest of the car. I figure the hood will take a couple of hours.

Yes I was able to go straight from Diamond Cut to AIO.

The diminishing abrasives in Megs compounds really do their stuff and have never to my knowledge left a haze.

The Tracker had been repainted at some point and the paint seemed pretty soft so I had a pretty good idea I could get most of the marks out with a PC.

AIO cleaned off any residue left behind ready to finish up with the UPP.

Shame I had to Scotchbrite it all off again 2 weeks later when the owner gave me a rubber check.

Some people never learn.

On the Maxima bumper, it looks like the shop did not tape up well, and had to buff all the overspray off. I take the extra 15 min., and tape up all the way to the top of the windshield, when painting a front bumper like that. Then, I drape plastic over the rest of the car.

Bumpers, here is a pic of the bumper, and the problem that it has. This is the fourth time the paint on the bumper has bubbled. It almost looks like runs in this pic, but it is a big bubble. The bumper was smooth upon delivery. After I fix the hood and remove swirls from the rest of the car, it is going into the shop to see if they can fix it right this time.

I cant make the picture out very well? Are the bubbles breaking? Are you sure its not fisheye, or trash in the paint? Not being smartbutt, just trying to figure this out. Have they taken it to a different shop for a second opinion? Thanks

Theyre not using the correct plastic primer for the bumper.

Your average automotive paint doesnt like to stick to plastic bumpers (or any trim for that matter) very much, so a particular prep NEEDS to be carried out otherwise it ends up looking like the photo.

I doubt theyve put plasticiser in the paint either .......

Both the primer and plasticiser are expensive, and unless they use it on a regualr basis they prolly wouldnt go out and buy a whole can just to do one bumper.

I bet a buck or two thats whats wrong.

It is definitely a series of bubbles in the paint. I have a hard time getting a pic, and that one was in almost direct sunlight. I'll try to get a better one soon. Smoker, I would agree with you if the shop didn't have 30 or so cars and trucks that they were working on constantly. Although, that could be why they are constantly working on so many vehicles, which conversely could affect the quality of their work. What a vicious cycle. I am about to post updated pics of the car, it looks very good now.
