Loaner car for customers

Well....on the upside it was -4c with snow flurries and whiteouts here today; so pretty much the same as the best weather you'll have all year! :D :D :D :D

Hey hey hey, we've been sitting at ~+1 degrees for weeks now. It JUST dipped down to -10 today. And in the summer we do get to hit +25 :)

There has to be some advantages to living there.

Tons, to be honest. Get PAID to travel down south to bigger centers. Health care wait times don't suck, and it's completely free. I don't mean "yeah if you can't pay the $200 a year then the government waives it", I mean 100% free. No PST. No HST. Car insurance is among the cheapest in the country. The air is the cleanest of any city our size or larger anywhere in the world. My morning "commute" to work is about 6min. And, of course, I get to see this every winter:

It was like 18C today in London and will be again tomorrow. Loving this!

+2 degrees here too. And it's light out until about 8pm now, getting closer to midnight sun :D

Sorry to the OP as well, we totally hijacked your thread. Well, I hijacked it first. But since it's going down this road anyways, I'm going to keep on it, lol.

Man, I wish. *** though, that isn't normal. I know in Alberta the weather's been crazy warm and dry too, almost no snow there !

With the mild weather we had in February we had our most profitable month EVER. March is a different story...rain, snow, wind storms. At least with time change it is light until after 7.

Oh, and that Northen Light picture is incredible. I grew up in central Saskatchewan and every once in a while we would Aurora Borealis would grace us with a little show...I miss that for sure.

I was driving home today on the 410 and there was one of those digital thermometer things in F; showed 81F. It's supposed to be 24C on Monday. It's the end of the world. :D

Does anyone offer a loaner car to their customers? I'm thinking of picking up a used Ford Taurus or similar car to let customers use while their car is here at the shop.

My biggest question would be about the registration/insurance. I know that when you rent a car, you can use your own insurance policy to cover the car. Can this be done with a loaner, or would I need to insure it myself under a policy where anyone can drive it? Any input is appreciated.

I think it will take some initial insurance hassles but eventually loaner cars work out cheaper than providing free rentals for them. But I can understand how each state is different. Look into online classic car auto insurance for what insurance would look like and maybe you can talk to the agency itself for a better opinion because I’m sure guidelines differ some from agency to agency as well.

i only let the customers i know personally take my truck, other than that, i offer pick up and delivery or u can wait for your vehicle for 4 hours. or just drop it off

I'm curious to hear from those like John that do a free loaner car. Has it been beneficial to offer a FREE loaner vs. charging a service charge of $20 to those customers who opt for a loaner? Curious to hear a discussion on this.

FREE is always better, plus you need some major insurance and paperwork to charge for a rental. If it's free, then it's a loaner. We have 4, so we offer our customers the car with an appointment for any service, even a wash. The thing is people come in and get a wash with a loaner car and it may not make a ton of money for that sale, but more often than not they come back for a major service another time.

Are your prices for services slightly higher than anywhere else as well ? In other words, would your prices be lower if you didn't offer the "free" loaner car ? Do you find that you get more business with loaner cars available ?

No, our prices are not any dictation of having the loaner vehicles. In fact, they are the best advertising we have, and get us more business than any other avenue. We have 4 Scion xB loaner cars driving around with our name and phone number all over them.

Interesting. So even though you have to pay for those 4 vehicles, pay maintenance on them, fuel and insurance, you find that they assist your bottom line vs merely causing an expense ?

Without a doubt. We're not talking about 50K Mercedes loaners. We're talking about a 18K Scion.

I'd be thinking a $5K Chevy, lol. Or maybe a Smart car. It would all be in the insurance and ongoing costs, not the capital to buy the loaners.
