It seems like most guys on here use a few light sources. The most common for paint correction seems to be my favorite, standard 500-1000W halogen trees. You can get them at almost any good hardware store, home depot and lowes both have them. You can find slightly higher quality ones online (not sure which sites for the US, I am sure someone will know). These are the ones you see in most of the before and after shots on autopia. They're good for finding most imperfections, although they have a tough time showing holograms.
Florescent seems to be more for ambient lighting. I have 20 fl true light bulbs in my garage, but they don't really show imperfections (aside from RIDs) as well as they show colour inconsistencies and just generally provide good light.
Metal Halide are probably the best for showing imperfections, but they are very expensive. I'd start with a halogen tree then see if it works for you.
