Lexus paint SS or MS

What year did Lexus change over to a multi stage paint process, from the single stage?

I have searched and cannot find a list of maunufactors that use single stage paint process. Can we create a list and then sticky it?

My brother has a 2006 GS430 (black onyx I think the color is called) and it has single- stage. From what I understand, the solid colors (non-metallic) are single-stage.

According to my Lexus dealership, the year that black onyx was CC is 1992. All Lexus paints after 1992 are clear coated. If someone has color transfer from 1992 on they either have a repainted panel or a tinted clear coat.

You can test to see if your car has single stage or clear coat by using an abrasive polish or a cleaner wax. Rub the product on the surface in an inconspicuous spot and look for lots of color transfer. If the pad is colored by the paint you have single stage.

I'd be willing to bet that every Lexus since atleast the early 90's are clear coated. Single stage means that there is no clear coat, just a base coat. Every car produced these days are definately clear coated 2 or 3 stage.

David, from my experience it's completely random. Same model, same year and same color. Some are BC and some SS(tinted clear?).

SS and base coat is the kinda the same thing. Tinted clear or regular clear is applied over the base boat and that makes it a 2 stage. There's not a car company using SS anymore. Every color is eighter 2 or 3 stage and there isn't a variation in types on the same color. I'm pretty sure of this.

There is no set year for the non-CC to the CC transaction. It depends on the model and color.

My 1999 Lexus GS400 has black onyx. It does not have clear coat. For my model and color, Lexus started to add clear coat in 2001.
