Lets talk about shaving

I got a couple feathers in a sample pack once. Had good experiences with them. Need to get some more, but they`re pricy.

True, but they`re expensive compared to other DE blades, and I have about 400 on hand already. Though I haven`t been getting good shaves lately, so I`m considering getting them.

Depends on use, I shave 3 times a week and get about 3 uses out of them so one a week. 52 blades a year, that`s about 17$ a year, cartridges were easily over 50+ a year.

I shave 5x`s a week. I can get 5 shaves from a personna, they`ve just been very rough shaves lately. And the feathers are twice he price of personna, and 3x`s as much as Astra`s which tend to do ok for me- not the closest shave but generally pretty smooth.

I want to try Astra`s and Merkurs, I`ve heard good things about both.

Personna is my go to blade, I buy the Israeli ones. There are others I`ll use, I have sample packs of almost every blade made. The Personna`s just work for me at a reasonable price. I like Feathers but only get 2 shaves out of them. Shark or Wilkinson will do.

Are you looking at for a first timers razor/handle (I don`t mean junk) or perhaps a Heirloom Quality Piece? I`d make different recommendations depending upon your desire.

I of course started with the Merkur 34c but there is nothing cooler than a vintage Gillette in your birth year. I had picked up a Gillette Slim Adjustable from 1964 and I love the way it shaves. I didn`t get into DE shaving to save money, I did it to get a less irritable more comfortable less blood letting shave and I succeeded. I can`t remember the last time I had a weeper but do get a touch of irritation now and then but that is a result of trying for the baby butt smooth shave and over do it. I also went as far as selling that Slim to my Friend when I picked up a re-plated in gold Slim Adjustable in my birth year. If you need to know what they cost check out Hibco Shave shoppe. Delta Echo does some pretty cool razor plating. Razor Emporium I think sells re-plated razors also. Most of these shops do re-plating of your razor but also buy, re-plate and sell.

If you are looking at vintage razors a good start is a Gillette Tech 3-piece in just about any year and they can be had for less than $20. Check out the bay. Badger and Blade just has an auction to support breast cancer and I just picked up a 1959 Gillette 3 piece Tech part of a starter shave set and by looking at it I can`t believe how nice it looks considering it is 57 years old. Looks like it just come from the factory.

I`m looking as a first timer to see if I like. I`m looking at a merkur 34c handle and a variety sample pack of blades

I don`t want heirloom quality if I don`t like

Classic Shaving had a sale the other day, with this bad boy marked down to 129. Wasn`t even in the market but couldn`t pass up a smokin hot deal on a very nice razor. Gotta get my Hoshi Tombo sent in to get sharpened.

I started researching DE safety razors a while back, then got sidetracked with other stuff going on in life.

I did ditch the Fusion 5 blade for the trusty Mach 3 turbo. Soooooo much less irritation (wondering why I even went to the Fusion in the first place).

I`m finding with razors, more blades are not better.

Surprised to see this thread is still active. This thread got me started a year ago and I have had wonderful shaves since I started DE shaving. Sure I have had some bad ones since I started but for the most part I love it.

Lots of different blades out there. I been through about a dozen different ones over the year and ordered 100 Gillette 7 o`clock Permasharp direct from India. A blade I personally find sharp and smooth. Soaps can get expensive but once you find something you like stick with it. I have acquired a few vintage razors, which a couple are in my birth year. One of which has been re-plated in rose gold so it looks like it was just made. The other couple razors look brand new for being over 50 years old.
