LC pads vs. 9006 in softness

Hi all,

In terms of softness, I'm getting different feelings about LC black, LC red, and Megs 9006.

From what I've read, a lot of people say 9006 is roughly the same as the LC black.

I think this is true when the 9006 is fresh.

But after some usage, 9006 seems to "soften." To a point even beyond the LC Blue or Red, almost feels a bit.. mushy.

At least that is the case with my friend's 2 9006 pads.

Has anybody else experienced this?

I really like the LC pads, but I have a black honda, I can't seem to get it perfect on LC red + Rotary (causes slight hologramming)

Anybody care to shine a light?

I remember reading that LC has a gold pad, but not readily available.

Should I go with the beat-up 9006 route, or try looking for LC gold ?

Here you go. Link

It is a great pad, but it might be your technique that's causing the holograms. The gold pad is designed for LSP application, not polishing. The soft black Honda paint is a pain to work with.

Todd's review of the gold pad. Link

This thread has some great info as well. Link

Have you tried to finish with anything besides LC red? What polish are you using, speed, pressure, technique? If I remember correctly, Todd and or Ryan mentioned something about using finishing pads on very soft paint and how they cause problems sometimes. Id try to finish with a blue or gray LC pad. If that doesnt work, you might have to finish with a PC.

I've had good luck on my NBP paint with Ultrafina and a blue LC pad (obviously the 3M ultrafina pad works too).

What polish are you using? Are you breaking it down completely?

blk45: Thanks so much for the links!!

D&D Auto Detail & etml12:

Thanks for the feedback.

hmm.. seems like technique is the main issue here.

I've been donig some more reading and I will play around with this a bit more over the weekend.

The lightest polishes I have are meg's 82 and 81

I think these might be poor choices for my black honda?

It's gonna be some time before i get my hands on some Menzerna. :bawling:

I also feel that Megs Finishing pad will start off being soft to the touch, and quite firm..but that firmness will become softer after a couple of uses.

I do lots of ultra-soft Honda clearcoats weekly, and I always finish up with my PC + Megs Finishing Pad and Menz PO85RD. Then, I'll proceed to pure polish+wax or just sealants.

Give ColorX a try. I saw Mike Phillips use it on a VERY scratch sensitive black finish when everything else left some marring. It finished out great on a 9006 pad.

You might want to try some Ultafina with that red pad and rotary. :secret
