Lawn Mower Suggestions

I'm in the market for a new lawn mower.

I'm looking at a Honda, but still keeping my options open at this time.

I want a walk-behind (not riding), but would like to get something that has a larger cutting width than the standard 21". What do you guys have? I'm open to any suggestions? Thanks.

Honda's are sweet machines if you don't mind the $$$. My father has one. He luvs running it.

I've had a couple of TOROs...they've been unstoppable.

Years ago I gambled, took the leap of faith, and bought a huge $$ (at the time) Honda walk behind with variable speed control. (an oldie - HR215)

It was one of the best purchases I've ever made. The darn thing has been bullet proof, starts easily every spring after the winter rest, and has been reliable each and every year since I bought it.

Features I'd look for and want: rear bag, variable speed control, and blade control.

Spring for the mulching kit. It includes a blade and a plastic plug for the rear exit hole and speeds up the mowing process because you don't have to stop and empty the bag.

Get a Honda unit that meets your needs, you'll never be disappointed, and you'll never second guess your decision to buy the Honda.

You could get a sheep! it'll cut the grass and fertilize it at the same time! You can use it's wool to make wash mitts and buffing pads, and when you tire of it you can always make lamb chops!

My dad got a Cub Cadet a few years back when we made our last move. It's a nice mower with a short turning radius, cruise control and the obligatory cup holder. :chuckle: He recently had to buy a new battery, but that has been the only thing to go out on it.

I bought a 2 year old Honda self-propelled Harmony II mower last year for $45 at a garage sale. It was originally $470 and it shows. The mower is much better than the Scotts mowers we've owned before. Better than the Toros we've had as well. I replaced the air filter, replaced the spark plug and bought a carb kit as it leaked, but to save $400, I'll spend $25 in parts and a little time.

Mows awesome, no complaints from about their stuff.

I bought an Ariens 21" 6hp walk behind a couple years ago and love it. It always starts on the first pull, even for the first spring start up. It also has an aluminum deck so its light and will never rust out. It actually has a quick connect for your hose so when your done cutting you hook up the hose and start the mower and it washes all the wet grass out from the underside of the deck. I love it...and it was cheaper than the Hondas. I bet the Honda is a very reliable machine too...depends on much you can spend.

We've also owned an Ariens riding mower. It was everything but unreliable. It just wouldn't die, so my dad eventually sold it so he could get a new mower. Same with our old Snapper mower.

Now that sounds like an idea! LOL Thanks for the laugh!

I have a John Deere right now, and it's *ok*, but I used to have a Husqvarna and there's nothing like it. I lost the Husqvarna in Hurricane Katrina, they don't float too well, lol, and I should have purchased another one just like it, but I didn't. The Greene just caught my eye!! Anyway, here's a link to a magnificent mower. It has a Honda engine in it and everything:

WELCOME TO HUSQVARNA - 1269

I have a Honda that was passed down from my dad who bought it back in 1991. It still runs like new and starts every time with no problems. They are the only mowers I will ever buy.

I have a 21 year old Toro that starts on the 1st pull 99% of the time and the 2nd pull the other 1%.

Other than spark plugs and oil changes, it's been bulletproof!

i bought the a new honda hrx217hxa at home depot last year.

it has made mowing the easiest task around the house , the versa mow system to adjust the bag / mulch is ideal, you can mulch 50% and discharge or bag 50% or any combo you wish to handle the longest grass. i thought it was just a gimick at first but has proved to be very usefull. i need not make any comments on the honda reliability they have been covered already, the honda was worth every cent and then some, i will never be sorry i bought it

I have a Toro with the Personal Pace system. I love it. It goes at your own pace, not some pace set by the manufacturer. I never run it out of gasoline at the end of the season, and yet like last weekend, all I did was push the bulb on the carb 5 times and it started on the first pull.

And, it is 22". Not a lot more than 21" but still a bit more.

thats also what is nice about the Honda is the hydrostatic speed control you can adjust the self propell from 0-4 mph

Went through this same stuff last winter/spring and decided on a Husquvarna 6.75 HVSE. Lowes had a display model on clearance, but found the Sears down the street had 2 NIB. It is 21" highvac, self propelled, electric start with bag/mulcher/discharge all in one box. Decided on the BS 6.75 over a Husky model with Honda motor for easier availability of filters/plugs. Turns out a great striped cut, fills the bag full even with damp grass, cleans up fall leaves beautiful, and starts every time. Only downside was steel deck rather than alloy. I like alloy decks for the corrosion resisitance and light weight.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Last weekend, with the horrible weather in STL, we went lawnmower shopping and came home with this.

This is the cheapest model in the HRX line, but I really liked the versamow system and the infinitely variable speed.

My father has a Toro with the personal pace system, and the handle will actually move to indicate to the mower to start moving, and I knew I didn't want that.

Tonight will be the fist time I get to take it for a spin. Thanks again.

I've had my HRX 217TDA for about a year and a half. Starts on the first pull (if you put the speed selector on choke first;)) every time. I do need to detail it though.:D I'm sure you'll enjoy using it as it's a well put together machine. The Xenoy deck was a big seller for me.

I bought a Husqvarna with a Honda motor. I love the Husqvarna feature of one lever adjust the height of all 4 wheels at once.
