Lack Of Eduaction

I took a survey last night at my detailing clinic, I had 40 or so people attend. No professinals, one show car owner, mostly just regular people looking for car care tips. Here is what I found.
50% of the people were using dish soap to wash their car on a regular basis.
a handfull of people paid car dealers between $400-800 to paint seal.
Most people thought waxing once a year was plently
4 used compounds by hand in an attempt to remove scracthes
some were using steel wool to remove bugs on glass and finish
No one knew what clay bar was
only 5 or so knew what Micro Fiber towels were.
Does anyone see a need or opportunity here?
I sold 75 MF towels, some of Dwayne's products, plus supplied lots of solid info. >The check for $200 was a nice perk as well. :D ;)

Nice work Gary....there is a large percentage of the car owning population that has little or no proper information....keep up the great work of Educating :D

"Eduaction?" just wanted to see who's awake> Seriously though, I'm in the process of making a tape for some people here that want more info, (they asked not to mention their names, which is fine) e mail me in private if you would like a tape sent to you. Gary

I know exactly what you speak of. There are people here in my town that think any interior product is made by Armor All, and everything else is just Armor All with a different name. While I do not think Yinylex is great, its by far better than Armor All. Seems that people are not willing to pay the extra $2-3 to get a prodcut that does not dry out your vinyl, oh well, their loss.

Oh, and how many of you have seen people that use just pure rubbing compound to "buff out and wax" their car?

I have seen people apply turtle wax and then go over there whole car with an electric drill with a wool attachment at the end attempting to "buff out the finish".

How common of a problem is this for you guys?

Often when I try to explain my work to a client, they think that compounding it used only by body shops, and that polishing is actually waxing. They have no clue why there is a difference inbetween polishing and waxing.

How do you manage to explain each and every step in lamens terms, whyole keeping them intrested? Most of my clients really want to know what I am doing, but they think I am trying to belittle them when I explain it. Im not trying to, but sometimes its hard to find the proper layman's words to describe everything.

Most people think look my finish is perfect I just waxed it. Waxing nowdays is only to give the more pop and some beading no real protection or polishing abilities.
