Known % of Carnauba

Can someone please post the known percentages of Carnuaba in the waxes? Specifically OTC ones?

I know Chemicalguys openly state their %, the same goes for Swissvax and Zymol.

Most vendors don't state the %, thus, it wouldn't be possible to tell you.

From what I've read, the common consensus is that it's the whole formula that matters, rather than that 1 ingredient. For example, let's say Formula A has 10% wax and a well engineered formula that balances carriers, optical enhancers, water beaders, ease of use stuff and scent. Formula B has 20% wax in it, but, since it has more % wax, it has to have less % other stuff. (Total has to equal 100%.) Since you have to take away something(s) to make room for the extra wax, your Formula B is going to be harder to use, bead less etc., so even though B has twice the carnauba as A, A would be seen as the superior wax.

Hope this makes sense! :)

When comparing % of carnauba you need to remember some companies state % by volume and others % by weight. Be sure you're comparing like with like!

Here's a quote from the Griot's Garage website that you may find helpful. But again notice that Griot's have neglected to state whether they are talking about weight or volume!

"Carnauba, in its natural state, is about as hard as a brick and needs petroleum distillates, mineral spirits, and other ingredients to make it soft enough to apply to your paint. You've seen other waxes advertised as "100% carnauba wax," but unless you are buying it in brick or chip form, it's just false advertising. Truth is, the maximum amount of carnauba that you can put in a paste wax is about 50% of total solids and still have it be workable."

Who really cares about the carnauba content? Seriously, as long as it looks good, is easy to use and lasts, than the carnauba content doesn't mean anything.

Thats why when you see Zymol have 70% carnauba in their waxes; you have to break them down the wax with the warmth in your hand. And then, apply it by bare hand also.

very true ...

i love souveran wax . and i have no idea how much carnuaba is in a tub . it might be like 30 percent or less . but it doesnt matter its an awesome wax .....

+1. I haven't seen any correlation with percentage and actual results. I've use stuff from Zymols Estate series to spray waxes.

Carnauba percents mean nothing. If the manufacturer is even telling the truth about what goes into their product, only results can tell you what is good and what isn't. That isn't to say that I haven't heard great things about high content carnaubas like Zymol and Swissvax and I don't doubt that they are, in fact, quality products; but I have had amazing results form M16 and NXT 2.0 without having any idea what the actual carnauba content is. I am content with being unaware, the results speak for themselves. If someone were to see the water beading I'm getting right now what it's raining from one coat of my $15 M16 wax, they might think twice about blowing hundreds of dollars on a high content carnauba.

If you really want to know the truth about %s i suggest you read this thread. Its a long read but has a lot of good information.

Dont believe everything you see about %s especially when they dont specify if its by weight or volume, etc.

The higher the percentage of carnauba the less the percentage of high grade, longer lasting polymers.

The less the percentage of high grade, longer lasting polymers the greater the depth. ;) ;)

it would be nice for a distrubitor to step in and make a comment.

The comment about carnauba content I got from Everett Glass at Clearkote concerning Carnauba Moose was "it has as much carnauba as I can add and still keep it usable. ;) I do know a 16 oz bottle of CMW has more heft to it than one would expect, but I don't know how that translates into percentage of carnauba content. What I do know is it definitely has a "carnauba" look to it so I am quite happy.

Its not just Carnauba though, they mix in other waxes as well and use oils to break it down and make it workable on the paint. Its the formula not the specific ingredient that makes the winning product. But Carnauba is certainly the primary factor in the formula.
