KC car detailing marathon

When my dark car is in the garage, I can see minor scratches by looking at the reflections of the overhead lights. When I pull the car outside into the sun, I see something totally different. If I look at a reflection of the sun, I see what looks like thousands of tiny scratches. They are long and arc around the reflection of the sun. It looks like a section of a target with the sun at the bullseye.

What do you call this? Is it normal or can it be removed?

If you have a wax or sealant on the vehicle, they are marring in the wax/sealant created by the towels or wash mitt.

Reapply the wax/sealant should remove them, they will disolve into the new layer of product.

Please allow me to elaborate and then tell me if you think the marks are in the sealant.

I had taken the car back to the dealer's paint shop to have contamination marks removed from the finish. They removed the water spot looking grundge but when I washed the car twice with Dawn in preparation for a sealant, I found scratches that they had covered with a glaze. I took the car back to the dealer to show them the scratches they had left. With the car sitting outside in the sun, I couldn't see the scratches that I had seen in my garage. All that I could see was the pattern of scratches that I described above. The person at the dealer's paint shop told me that all cars look like that in the sun and that we would see them on a new car from the lot too. I told her that I had not seen the pattern before they removed the spots and she said that the spots were covering them up. Can you believe this? Anyway, do you still think that this pattern of marring could be in the wax/sealant/glaze after two Dawn washings?

It may be that they clayed the vehicle and put the marring in the clear.

Or, they may be from the kid in the back that does the work, used rental towels (ick, rough towels) and put them in while wiping off some polish.

Could be a lot of reasons for the concern.

All you can do is polish them out and reseal.

look into getting a Porter Cable 7424 orbital buffer. It's much safer then a rotary buffer for the average person and it will remove the marring and any micro scratches that are driving you nuts.

Take my word for it (I'm very picky about my cars)invest in a good buffer and some good towels for your finish. :)

I have something that sounds just like what dremelius has-- and it was there on delivery of the car. I hestitate to call them "swirls" because, although per a dictinary definition they probably are swirls, you can only see them under the specific and limited conditions dremelius describes.

They bothered me, but no one else notices them unless I point our the angle to look at them at, so I have let it ride. DK and others have called what my car has "spiderwebbing."

Any comments? Ron?

Try taking a picture of the "spiderwebbing" marks. I have tried but they never come through on the camera. Yet "swirl" marks always seem to come through when I take pictures of them.

Any reason why this is?

I see "spiderwebbing" (dremelius description is:They are long and arc around the reflection of the sun. It looks like a section of a target with the sun at the bullseye) at car shows on even the best cars there in the right(or wrong) light.

Maybe Brad can chime in about the perfect paint finish since he enters and wins Concours events.

Ric, it depends on what you focus on and if you use film or digital media. I would not recommend a strobe but use bright lights instead.

Try focusing on the paint and not on reflections off the paint.

RIC -- Good points. I noticed the same thing at car shows, too! I could not believe that so many cars -- like 90% -- had noticible flaws in the paint. It made me feel a bit better. <em class='bbc'>However[/i] there were a few cars - only about two!! -- that had <em class='bbc'>no[/i] spiderwebbing (or whatever the hell it is).

Brad, what have you observed?

I would be interested in additional views on this topic.
