Just picked up an 7336 open box but it didn't come with the key to remove pads

I'm guessing this isn't a Porter-specific tool, so can anyone tell me what the size is on it and where I might be able to find one? What else comes new in the box?



Went to Lowes to see if I could get a new one for $45 (like some of the other people were doing on Autopia) but they didn't have them (nor did ANY OTHER Lowes in the area). But they did have a showroom model which probably has never even been turned on...it looks almost brand new except for a few scratches and dust...The guy originally said $50, but I talked him down to $45 because it didn't have the box...still not a bad deal for a $120 tool...Gonna be ordering a decent backing-pad and some LC pads and some more Poorboy's polish for my next detailing...



Oh one final thing, any reason to get the bigger center-weight for the 7336 to make it the 7424? Or is that un-necessary? If its necessary, where can I get that? Thanks
 
I don't know the size but it need it be a thin wrench

so..I would take it to a bike shop and see if they have a wrench

heh, thats what the guy at Lowes suggested...a bike shop...



oh and any suggestions for a decent backing pad?

I don't think there is a mojor difference between them.....

I would just get one (or more) from one of the places that you are going to buy your

pads and products from



do a little reading around here and you will find several place that people llike to shop from

also check out the board sponsers some have discounts.
 
I use a 5 inch Lake Country backing plate with the 6.5 LC pads. That combo is very popular on here.



You can't go wrong with the Poorboy's polishes. You should also look into Optimum. The Optimum doesn't dust and can be worked in longer than most polishes.

I went downstairs and measured mine for you.

Mine's the 7336 which is the same as the 7424 so you'll want a 9/16 wrench.

Once I had my backing plate off, I could fit a regular wrench in there and the 9/16 fit perfectly, so you have a few options.

-You could make your own but that'd be very labour intensive,

-You could take a regular 9/16 wrench and grind it down thinner so it would fit. A bench grinder would do the job in a few minutes. If you or a pal had a grinder, this'd be the route to go.

-Go to any shop like the suggested bicycle or small motor repair, or warranty repair shop and buy one there. 9/16 inch has to be extremely common with circular saws, grinders, etc.



When you try to stick the wrench into the bolt area, you'll see 1/2 of the area has a little less clearance than the other half. The really tight half is that way because you're looking over top of the counterweight, so stick the wrench in the other side for a little more clearance. The counterweight is held in with two phillips screws/bolts and you'll see them clearly when you have the backing plate off just in case you ever want to change weights.

excellent...thank you...I actually found a site that sells replacement wrenches for the PCs...but I think I might even have a flat 9/16s wrench so I appreciate the measurement...

That's not neccessary as it is 7336SP that has bigger counterweight (6") than 7424 (5").
 
I just picked up my PC 7336 at Lowes today for $65 and asked if they'd take anymore off. They said 10% so out the door for $58. I can live with that! Since it's way too cold outside to do anything, I was reading the instructions, andit says you can go here to order parts : New Member--Part 1, DEWALT ServiceNet



Not sure if this will have what youre looking for but thought I'd throw it out there! Now I just have to figure out what pads I'm gonna order and what other goodies! I can't wait for it to warm up!
 
You did very well on your purchase; congrats! Another option for pads is the Edge 2000 system. Just thread on the adapter and snap on a pad. You're ready to go and when the pad gets dirty or you want to use another product flip it over. I've used backing plates with LC VC pads and 3M's and they work great as well.



Juztang is right about the Optimum polishes, they work for a very long time and don't dust as much as the Poorboy's. I'm sure you'll have fun and have outstanding results no matter what you end up buying.

thanks...but I'd rather not buy it online...I want to see if it fits first before I buy it...the tool shouldn't be anymore than $5 anyways...so no big deal
 
If you need the wrench, just email/call Porter Cable and explain the situation. I would be willing to bet they will send you one free.

At a bike shop you'd be looking for a cone wrench, depending on the exact fit 14 or more likely 15mm. My old 14mm fits, but it's ancient and worn. They only come in metric sizes.
