What kind of buffer did you buy? Personally, if the wax is liquid I prefer to apply by machine then buff it by hand. If it is a paste wax, then youre fine by buffing it with the buffer.
There are no risks when using a random orbit buffer, because its motions are completely... *ahem*... random, it does not generate enough heat or friction to scratch or harm the paint in any way. Just use common sence, dont place the buffer pad on the ground, don't push too hard (let the buffer apply/buff the wax), and be careful about power cords swinging around and hitting the paint (happens to me a lot).

well, i bought the buffer off a guy i work with (his wife gave it too him for a gift, he used once/twice didn't like so he left me have it --> i gave loaned him a few bucks a long time ago .... yadda yadda yadda ... to make a long story short it only cost like 5 bucks plus the price of some buffer pads)
it is an mvp 6 inch orbital buffer --> i know it aint the best, but to just be given it and it being my first buffer i thought it couldn't hurt..
i use meguirs wax... it is liquid... i have been putting it on by hand and taking it off by hand so i thought any little help would be good.

Orbitals are actually better for applying waxes, polishes, SMRs, etc... I still find buffing by hand to be better and more effective. You can use a wool pad, COVERED with a terry or MF bonnet for wax residue removal. I've done that, but wasn't overly impressed with the results.
most people apply wax witha buffer. not buff it off (name can be misleading becasue of that.)
The main use is for abraisives that take a while to work in. The buffer can do it a h$$$ of alot faster than doing it by hand. Things like smr and meg #9 am up the scale of agression.

apply a quarter size dab of waax in the center of the bonnet
put the buffer in the car and THEN turn it on (otherwise, you will get a splashy mess.
appliy with front to back motions in a small area, let the machine do the work and let the wax spread thin... repeat until done with car.
wait fro the specified amount of time (waxes vary, read instructions)

:bounceTheoretically you could use a orbital for almost anything but claying - polishing, waxing, buffing either of these off. How well it polishes is the reason why people go with a PC because of the drag and load placed on it when polishing.

I'm looking at econo orbitals and I might go with a Wen since they're pretty high speed (compensating for the inevitable loaded OPM drop) and I just can't justify the cost of a PC right now, especially since the need for one is relatively low for me.

yeah that's the one, however i wouldn't spend that much on it (i got it for 5 bucks!!!) and that is really all it is worth, it does work, but i wouldn't pay alot for it..... do some more searching around, i am positive you can get a cheaper one....... ahhhh i forget the amps (i just moved into college and i left it at home
