Just detailed engine bay, metal problems

1. The intake manifold on 4th gen Maximas is a rough textured aluminum. I scrubbed mine with a toothbrush and some APC/water, and it came out great.

3. That "bleached" look came from the degreaser. The only time I ever used a hose and degreaser on my Maxima's engine (when I was just getting into detailing), I had the same experience. [/IMG]

So would diluting the APC with water avoid the problem of "bleaching"?

What ratio do you like to use?

I actually use Tire Foam and spray the whole engine with it, and I use a good bit too.

So you spray down everything with Tire foam, I mean everything :D ?

It just makes me weary spraying everything with tire foam :scared: ,

I have actually neglected my engine bay and needs some work. As much detailing as I do to everything I'm a newb on engine bays my usual process was Engine Gunk Foam and spray off and go :banned: .

Thanks

Does it sound possible that the heat from the warm engine caused the full strength degreaser to etch the metal?

This happened to me with my polished aluminum Centerline wheels. The dealership gave me a free sqirl installation during an oil change (didn't ask for it). The tire dressing ran off the tires and onto the wheels. They parked the car in the sun to dry and it etched the heck out of the wheels.

I never tried spraying the engine down with APC, so I'm not sure if a weaker dilution of APC/water would help. I would assume it would. I use a 3:1 ratio of APC/water on engines...the same bottle I use on tires.

dont use amoral on your enigne bay, it contains silicone which can result in a damaged 02 sensor, it has happened before. Use only a non silicone spray. You cant wash your vehicle at all not even the outisde living in an apartment? As for the metal I would try to flitz it, that stuff works great!! Good luck!

He could get some QEW and use that to wash his car all he wants while living in an apartment. I'm moving into an apartment this Saturday and that's how I'll be washing my car. A touchless wash once or twice during the winter might happen too, just to spray off all that salt and crap from the underbody.

Well they pay for water, but there's no hose anywhere. I don't have a problem with QEW. If the car is really caked with salt of something, I'll probably end up taking it through the touchless wash, and then I'll bring it home and QEW it. :)

Last winter I just tried to get home before the salt could dry on the car. If there's still snow on the car, then the salt is more or less floating on the paint, rather than being stuck to it. If that's the case, removing it is very easy.

Castrol APC is some SERIOUS stuff.

I'm pretty sure the staining you're seeing is the acid in the cleaner eating away at the metal a little bit. Anyone feel free to correct me or confirm this.

I had this happen once on an engine detail, only I couldn't polish it up because the aluminum that was affected was a raised AND milled and ridged, so the metal polish didn't do a great job... it was a PITA just getting the metal polish off :P

I'm not one to spray a bunch of gunk into an engine compartment, myself. I like Klasse AIO on all the hard plastic and shiny metal and then 303 or a glossier dressing if you prefer on the rubber and soft plastics.

Yeah I had pass experience with Meg Super Degreaser. I added too much MSD and kiled my AEM intake pipe. The intake pipe now looks like a zebra stripe :lol
