Just call me Mr.Wolf...

Garry Dean

Garry Dean Quality!
So I got a call yesterday from a gentleman at a real estate company. The guy explained that there is an apartment complex behind their building and they were having some painting done and all 8 cars in tthe real estate companys parking lot are now riddled with black over spray.

We talked a bit more and I agreed to come by and inspect the vehicles.

I got there and the painters were there washing the vehicles with dirty cotton towels. (cringe) One of the painter guys was rubbing a black vehicle with a dirty cotton towel and Turtle wax rubbing compound to remove the overspray... Clearly they should stick to painting because they have no clue about removing overspray or detailing in general.

I gave them a quote, they agreed and scheduled all 8 cars and I was on my way.

About 30 minutes later as I was headed to my next job, I recieved a call from the manager of the apartment complex. The first thing he said to me is $$$ per car huh? I said absolutely... I actually want more, but I understand that this sucks for everyone so I kept the per vehicle price the same even though 3 of them were SUV's.

He started in on how I was too expensive and that he could call around and get a better quote. I told him no problem, do that... When that cheap guy does a xxxxty job and the real estate company is not happy he can feel free to call me back and I will honor the same price.

I asked him if he had ever seen the movie Pulp Fiction. He said yes... I then asked him if he would like the people off his back and for this issue to just go away. He said "of course." I then explained that I am like Mr.Wolf... I take care of problems and make them go away. If he wants this problem gone simply and easily I am his guy.

Im sure he still didnt like the price, but Im not going to budge. For those of you who have delt with severe overspray you understand how much of a PITA it can be to remove all of it, even with a medium grade clay bar. Following medium grade clay you always need to polish to remove the micromarring that the clay leaves behind.

The manager wants to meet with me face to face this morning. I can only assume that he wants to try and negotiate in person. We shall see. I will pass if he doesnt take my price. I will have to move my schedule around to fit them all in beyond the extreme PITA they will be.

We shall see how this turns out. I will keep you all posted.

Pretty funny Garry. I know how people like that can be. I use to do some work on cars (not detailing) and would have people call or text me asking for pricing and I always had some say I was too expensive and want to negotiate. Good for you for the way you explained things to the manager

I always explained that if they rented or purchased the tools needed it would cost them more plus they would have to do the labor and risk messing something up since they don't have the experience I have. I told them they could look for someone cheaper if they did not like my pricing. Out of all those people only one didn't call me back from what I remember.

I deal with overspray all the time thanks to the hack body men we have at work. It really is a huge pita, and I don't blame you a bit for whatever price you put on those jobs. When your dealing with stuff like that, you never really know how long its going to take, and even the higher side of a quote is normally not enough. Stick to your guns. You'll get them one way or another.

Success! I held my ground, started to walk away and then...

The manager > "Ok, Ok... You got the job. I need this done right. You're the man we need."

Thanks for the replies guys. I will post some vids. I start on these Monday am.

Congrats Garry. Glad this worked out for you...:yourrock:yourrock

I was out of my shop last week due to powerwashing and painting going on on the outside. I understand what a pain overspray is. Especially when they said they may use Imron on the metal awnings. There is no way I'd bring any clients vehicles around. It took 30min to unstick all the doors including the 12ft bay door:(

Congrats on sticking to your guns and getting the jobs. Its worth the risk vrs. losing your tail.

Awesome Garry! Pulp Fiction is possibly the greatest movie of all time!

Great job standing firm on your price as well.

Next time tell him the difference between your work and the other guys work is like the difference between a foot massage and eating......:D

Nice! I'm glad you got the job and stuck to your guns on the pricing. You get what you pay for. Looking forward to the vids!

pics please of the work in progress once you get started. I don't have to much experience with overspray and interested to see what you're working with and how you tackle it

great story BTW

Good for you Gary !!

I wouldnt budge on price either, esp on overspray !

BTW I had some unusually difficult overspray that even red clay magic wouldnt get off and I tried my new goof off "wipes" that got if off with no problem or marring .

I used extra caution though and made sure to wash any chemicle residue off immediatly as Im not 100 sure its paint safe for all paints .It was also a white vehicle so not sure how it would go on dark vehicles but the overspray came off very quickly and easily .

Best find of the year !

Good luck!
