I think that their point is that everyone can not be a detailer. You can act like, talk like and walk like one, but in fact unless you think like and show to be a detailer, you are not one. Everthing they say is good practice because they start with the least aggresive or an experienced approach.
I know most "detailers" in my area smear solvent based, silicone dressings on everything on the interior and call it good. Guess what, their customers think they did a great job. They also use filler waxes with a rotary. They do good , fast work, for a time, but then when things start to look second rate, they blame the detailer in general. This makes my job twice as hard, to explain the difference and cost.
There are no set guidelines, standards or timelines for detailing, therefore the whole business is judged on past work and cost.
I'm going to keep rambling for a little bit.
A friends mom and pop wanted their car cleaned because i did the guys uncles. On the uncles newer Grand Am i did a shampoo, int. clean and wash and bugs and then Z5 and Z2 for $90 inc. tax/total. I thought a pretty good deal for them.
Well the mom and pop want their car done because of. Their car is older and is heavily smoked in. I quoted them $140 for the same. A lot more work and the tax here is 14% and i include shop supplies in all my work, works out $120.
Well the shop down the street does it for $100+tax including the trunk and the engine.
How can and why would you compete with this prices. No detailer can, unless you take every short cut and become an 'express' carwash and push out work that is no better than the person could have done themselves.

Some of their cars look really nice and some....are lacking that extra "pop" that so many here get cars to do. hmmm

Thanks Scott. In some ways i was making my point and in others i was just being sarcastic. My point is - with hack cleaners, it's hard to stand out, after the damage is already done.

Very nice article! I also agree with most of it except that they are giving out wrong info as well. (internet sites) Because of the www we have excess to a ton of very GOOD info

I agree. I was lucky that I got a customer with a Rolls 4 months before I went full time, several of the customers I picked up because they drove past and saw me detailing a Silver Spur are still with me, 9-10 years later, and so is the original customer (he is the one with Phantom now).
If his assistant hadn't seen the sign on the Celica I used to have when I first started, I don't know that I would have the clientel I do now. Funny how a chance encounter like that works out, huh?

I guess I just like to try stuff. I may order some this spring since I have so much stuff now.
