What did you use on your "Sanctuary" floor for a sealer or paint?

You have one fine looking stable my man!!!!! :up :up
 
I had the two sides of my garage floor done at different times. The big side is a two part epoxy that has been pretty much bullet proof for the last 5-6 years. The small side is a special chemical resistant Urethene. Both were professionally applied.

Brad had his floor done by a pro. Most DIY jobs end up lifting and peeling off, so if you want it done right to have to get a pro to do it. I am pretty sure that it is a 2 part Epoxy that the pros use. But your floor has to be prepped very well, including etching with acid. Search the archives, there were several threads about garage floor, and Brads in perticular.
 
Also, check the archives about garage mats. They are very nice quality, look good and they are a cheaper option than getting your floor done by a pro.

You local Sams Club might have them, I know mine does. They have a 8'x20' mat for $119. And www.samsclub.com has them in bigger sizes if you need it. They are a great option considering that it will cost about $700 at least to get your floor done by a pro.
 
The epoxy paint is not a simple DIY job. I myself have been frozen into inaction. As a matter of fact, I haven't been able to pry myself from this spot in weeks. I just sit here and surf the net. I need help.



Seriously, though. Brad - those floors are awesome. I would love to see the stable one of these days.



I am leaning towards the vinyl garage floor mats for now. I need to do it soon, the vette arrives in a week or two.



I have seen one santuary that put even Brad's to shame. A couple of years ago I had to travel to Bloomington, IL for my grandfathers funeral. I re-met a guy who was my Dad's best friend there before we moved away in '74. He is like the Corvette king - as long as you are talking 1963-1967 Stingrays. He literally wrote the book on restoring these cars. Name is David Burroughs. He started the Bloomington Gold Corvette show years ago, but he doesn't do it anymore.



Anyway, we all went to dinner and back to his house. He has a house attached to his garage, best way I can put it. I would estimate that his garage is 4000 square feet. With 20 foot ceilings. I may be off a bit but believe me, it is huge. And immaculate. With awesome shelving, but utilitarian - no garage queen stuff.



To give you an idea how big, he is restoring (perfectly, mind you) a WWII vintage Stearman Biplane in one corner of the garage. It is the last known original Stearman that has all its' parts and was never converted to a crop-duster. When he is done, the Smithsonian has dibs on it. It is, to his knowledge, the first time the Smithsonian has done this - allowing an individual to restore a plane planned for exhibit. He is that good. Oh, he is also a top-rated stunt pilot.



When we were there, he started his absolutely gorgeous 1967 (I think) Corvette (427 - oh baby!) I can't even begin to describe how great it sounded. My wife was swooning. Seriously. He then got his little black book out of the glove compartment and noted the exact time and duration of the "run". This car is worth approximately $150,000 according to David - but it's not for sale. He has others that he would sell, but not this one.



He pointed out that when he was restoring this particular car, he had a really difficult time figuring out how the original paint was applied. Seemed the orange-peel was kinda funky or whatever. Took him a few weeks of experimenting until it finally hit him - the factory paint was applied by a left-handed worker. So, he painted it left handed (or had it done that way I think.)
 
There are some really good threads happening on TID right know. I see alot of different ideas imerging and... I like what I see. I think it is time to have a "JUST BECAUSE" contest. OK, here is what I want. For everyone that tells me what they like about TID AND what they would change...or add... (be kind...) I will look at and enter in the contest. The idea I like the best, I will give a Blackfire Midnight Sun and Wet Diamond All Finish Paint Protection Sealant combo. For the next two I like, I will give the choice between the wax and the sealant. I will cut this off on Sunday, the 17th. at midnight. For the late entry people... don't even try! It ends at midnight, on Sunday.

Here are two suggestions:

1. I would like to see a "History of JACK and PAC" thread.

Maybe it could be a thread, or perhaps an article.

I recently met Jack at SEMA.
I came away with a realization that Jack's interest in and dedication to our industry was noteworthy, to say the least.

He is a true-to-life trendsetter in the retail sector of this industry.
Jack knows a lot about a lot, but somehow I don't think this is apparent.

I would also like to see a bio about each person on the front lines at Proper Auto Care and Truth in Detailing.

I believe that there are a lot of consumers like me, in that, we prefer to know if the people we are dealing with really "get" us and our industry.

2. I would also like to see an icon... a flash-type button on the home page of PAC that toggles between recent how-to articles, the latest diagrams, and perhaps some of the special write-ups going on at TID. It could go right next to the Proper Auto Care badge at the top of the screen. Click on the button and it takes you right to the cutting edge stuff!

What I like:

It's a positive place, filled with excellent information, by some of the best-know and most respected detailers in the world.

Rarely do I read a negative post and I learn something every day.

What I would like to see:

I'd like to see a forum topic area on HEALTH. It could cover such topics as:

Working out
Weight lifting
Running
Cycling
Swimming
Nutrition
Dieting
Healthy living
Health problems
Check-ups
Competitive sports

And so on, and so on.... Sounds like a winner to me!

Great idea, Jack. I'm on all the usual Detailing Forums and I always check TID first. The participants are a great mix of pros, part-timers and enthusiasts who are always ready to share info in a constructive manner. I have to attribute this free-flow give & take to the tone you, Todd and everyone else associated with CMA set for the Forum.

There's a couple of things I'd like to see on the Forum and they're somewhat related. Many Forums offer a place to pass along products to other members. Sure everybody has Trade Forums but many have For Sale Forums as well. Last I looked at the rules TID was trade-only. And I see a few folks are looking to "trade" for cash so I s'pose the "trade" aspect may not be stringently enforced. All of us detailing addicts have excess product that we'd like to pass on cheap and aren't necessarily looking to make trades. Personally, I'd like to offer fellow TID members first shot at anything I'd like to get rid of. Although at first glance this might be viewed as CMA inviting 'competition', I can't believe members peddling tidbits to one another would adversely affect business. I know when I buy unwanted product from other members anywhere it's because I want to try something new and don't care to by a larger size, more expensive item until I give it a test drive.

I run across a lot of good deals online and I'm on everyone's mailing list for specials. I've never posted any detailing supply sales or specials on TID because I felt it would probably be unappreciated and risk biting the hand that feeds me, so to speak. Many Forums do have areas to post any and every deal to be found, regardless of whether it is a direct competitor of the Forum's sponsor. When I asked a Moderator why they invite competition in their own Forum I was told it gives an opportunity to see what everyone else in the business was up to. ::::shrug::::

I'd also like to see those that lurk as guests join the mix. I don't know how that could be encouraged unless perhaps some kind of killer incentive was offered for new members. They are missing out by not taking part and the rest of us are missing that which new members would add to the Forum.

TID quickly became my favorite Detailing Forum when I joined last Spring. I can find nothing 'wrong' that needs fixed, as such it makes it difficult to even think of any needed improvements. Thanks for sponsoring a place where everyone can learn and share in such a friendly, easygoing setting.

As an aside, I was wearing my new "Got Shine" T-shirt the other day and a stranger asked if I was in the "home distilling" business. :p By the looks of him I'd say he just might drink most of his 'cocktails' out of Mason jars. :D

Great contest. Starting the year off right!

What I like:

The overall tone of the forum, the mix of top notch detailers to casual car waxers seems to work well, I like the look and style of the forum, I'm happy to see PAC involved with new media tech like Twitter and Facebook, and the level of involvment of mods and admins seems about right.

What I'd like to see improve:

Page load speed still feel sluggish, I'd like to find a way to pump up the how-to's section, Todd has done a good job generating content for the Shine Institute but growing that needs continued focus.
 
I don't post here as much as at AG - so I am by no means a regular on this site, although I do read it daily. Here's my impressions however of this forum.

The Good...
First off - I like that El Presidente actually posts here regularly. It is nice to see interaction directly from the top.

Secondly - there are some very skilled detailers that post here. It is always nice to look at their work for inspiration and just to see the level that they take it to. This is really what keeps me checking TID.

The Other...
Just keep the forum moving along. Don't let it become stagnant.

The good:

  4. Association with excellent retailer - Proper Auto Care
  5. The PAC "rewards program"

Improve:

A button, on multiple page threads, that would switch the view to one long page.

Then I could easily scroll up or down rather than have to find the button for the next, or previous, page.
 
I like the fact that Jack and Angelo are active in the forum. It shows that they are watching and listening to their customers and what is going on in the detailing world. This place is also filled with quality artists that are willing to share their work and their knowledge so openly. I learn something new nearly every time I visit. :clap:

I wish this site would load faster. There are times I like to jump in and take a quick look, but the slow loading pages make me go :toetap05: .

This is a great forum. The wealth of knowledge from all the professional detailers is amazing plus the fact that they will gladly share their expertise is just awesome. I have learned a lot in just the short time that I have been a member.

One suggestion I have (page format) would be to make the header line that has the TID logo and "User CP, Forums, Shop PAC Site, PAC Blog, etc." selections to remain stationary so that when you scroll down though a thread and get to the bottom you don't have to scroll all the way back up to click on something like 'New Posts' or 'Today's Posts'.

Also maybe some new emoticons
 
Jack - as an enthusiast/lurker on here I really appreciate the quality of the posts and the professionalism of its members. Some of the folks here have been banned from other sites due to politics, but their contributions to the industry and forums is legendary (you guys know who you are and I am thankful that you take the time to answer noobs like myself on 'simple' questions)

I give a +1 to the bios suggestion.
 
I find TID well moderated and a fairly open forum considered it is sponsored by PAC. I have not seen many dramas here and what threads have taken a turn have been dealt with quickly.

For improvements, I would like to the forum design scheme changed so the message area is wider. There is at least 3/4-in wasted on each side with the message box on a black background. The black text on orange background is easy on the eyes and the color scheme overall is good. Others have already mentioned the performance.

I would also like to see the reference articles (Todd's work on pads, jeweling, etc) in some portable PDF format like manual so they are ALL in one place and not scattered in various thread topics. I really liked David B's (Autopia) self-running series of articles on car care. You could download and read/watch later.

I would also like to see video's on polishing cars like KB method, etc.

The only issue that I have is, how long it takes for the pages to load

What I would like to see added to the site:
An ask the experts forum - I would like to see a forum dedicated to Q&A's from Angelo, Todd and Jack about products, proceedures, techniques, etc.

Keep up the great work at PAC and TID. Of all the sites that I visit, this is ALWAYS my FIRST stop.:rockon:
 
What I like about the TID site: I love how members are very helpful about sharing tips, techniques, information, etc. I also like checking out all of the pics posted of members work.

What I would add: I think it would be especially cool to have a section where members could upload video's of various 'how-to' techniques or finished details. Perhaps product manufacturers could even do the same...

Just my .2 cents!
