Jopa489 Detailed: 1978 Pontiac Trans-Am Gold Special Edition *100 PICS*

That looks AMAZING!!!

I'm glad to hear those aren't the original tires. Tires should be replaced every 5 years at the most, even with zero miles. They start to dry/crack/rot, and become unsafe.

The appliques all over the car look cool for the era, but they would have me absolutely :nervous2: every time I washed the car for fear of slowly peeling up the edges. Using ONR very carefully and a wipe on sealant might be the best way to go to get another 30 years out of that finish.

awesome car! Thanks for all the pics. They're a great resource for someone doing a resto. I have a buddy that just restored his black '78 4 speed SE with the same 8"x15" snowflake wheels you have. Can you please post a pic of one of the original tires or at least post the size? I've read a lot of conflicting info on the factory size and you can put the debate to rest.

Thanks,

Andy

Yeah, I can do that. I'll get the brand, type, and size and let you know. :)

Thanks for sharing the pics. I had a 1979 Red T/A with the 6.6 Olds 403 engine and 185 hp. It sure would fly even with just 185 hp. I really miss that car sometimes because it would go just about every where and in all kinds of weather. I got caught out in it twice in major snow storms and it ran better than most 4x4s.

Thats a great car. There were a few up at collector cars last week. You should meet up with the guys.

Cool, where was that held? Since the T/A has been sitting for a few years, we haven't started looking into events and meets yet. This summer though! :)

They are in NY. We have get together's frequently and the mix of vehicles is growing.

I'll PM you next time, will be soon before the weather turns. Many more to follow.

Rovers

BMW M

Ferrari

Porsche

and now the T/A guys.

Its a good time.

That F40 in the shot should be in Pebble Beach next year for the F40 reunion. I'll be there also.

I was a freshman in highschool when this car was first made. While I prefer it in black, I do recall drooling over them in a bad way. I later ended up with a '73 455 TA.

sweet, thanks, I can't wait!

It might take me a little while, but I won't forget. Currently snowing around here, and the tires are stored behind the T/A in the garage at my dad's house. Next time I'm there and it's not snowing/raining, I'll pull the car out and take a look for you. :)

Thanks again everyone for all the comments!

Holy memories. I bought my 78 gold edition trans am as my 1st new car. It is exactly like your dads except mine had the WS6 handling package with the 8" rims.

I traded in a 74 455 ho T/A. Mine also had the Pontiac 400 T/A 6.6 engine instead of the olds engine. I paid $9,999 Canadian back in April 78 & that was obscene amount of $$$. Wish I still had it!

while i admit never being a fan of this particular car, you did a nice job cleaning her up, a little more tlc and it will look like new again. best of luck with it.
