Jewelers loupe, which magnification for detailing?

I would like to get a jewelers loop to inspect defects in paint more thoroughly anybody know what magnification i should get, thanks in advance.

I'd pass an get an get a digital microscope, preferably one that attaches to a phone. Google what Larry Ammo uses, his works great.

I should have chosen the Samsung Galaxy over this Windows Phone i got, been a pain trying to find one of these adapters for my phone. I have the hand held equivalent of these little microscopes(works very well for the price) and a larger USB one (works great with my laptop, but not my Amazon Fire Tablet). I got both from Amazon.

I'm big on using magnification...moreso as I get older I guess.

My advice is to *NOT* go too strong on the magnification. I use my 15X (illuminated) loupe a *LOT* more than my more potent one, and I usually have somewhat low-X lenses in my magnifiying visor. Don't overdo it or IME it'll just sit on the shelf. No, that's *NOT* how I expected it to turn out...live and learn ;)

There was a magnifier diy thread on here, but now I can't find it. He used a magnifier lens that he bought off Amazon and a cheap iPad case. Some how he glued the two together and he put it on his iPad when he wanted to use it. If I find it I'll post it.

Cool , thank you . I do remember seeing that thread and i'm glad you brought it up. I will be trying this out so that i can have a picture function and be able to save the images.
Anytime. Keep us updated on how it works. I am interested in doing it as well at some point.

Mique- Heh heh...talk about differing preferences! And here I don't even like my 30X one for inspecting scratches most of the time but you're using that 60-100X one!

haha yeah i know, i inspect the scratch a few times at different magnifications(OCD i guess?) and it personally gives me a closer idea on the chance of repair. It's kind of tricky to keep it steady due to the magnification, but once i got a lock on it, i move veeeery slowly to look at the entire length and try to spot any potential problem areas according to how wide the scratch is and by identifying any exposed paint(that's why i like higher magnification,to distinguish paint from CC).I don't like having to wet sand the vehicle/damage, so i guess that's why i inspect the damage so much.

I should have that tiny one from the modification tutorial come in the mail by tomorrow, but i still have to find a case that's cheap enough for my table and i'm thinking about doing the install for my phone as well. It's not an Iphone, so i'd have to do the mod to it myself.
