jdizzle's 2011 winter wax test

Alright everyone, I’ve had one successful wax test, and have tried 2 other unsuccessful times.

I’ve recently purchased a new car, a 2012 civic SI sedan in charcoal grey. (if anyone would like a thread on the new SI let me know and ill post more pictures.

I did not trade in my old 03 civic ex sedan so it is just sitting in the driveway (being driven once or twice a week). This gives me the PERFECT platform to do a wax test on since nobody else drives the car. I’m asking for everyone’s input on this since every time someone does a wax test they are always told they should have done something differently. So here are my questions to you all.

• How would you like me to prep? _____________

I can do a dawn wash, followed with paint cleaners (mothers, liquid glass, pinnacle paint cleansing lotion etc) IPA wipe downs. Or I can polish the test area and follow with IPA.

• What products would you like to see tested, AND what sort of layout do you think would be best? I know if some waxes are in the center of the hood they should in theory wear out faster than ones that are on the roof, due to more air flowing over the surface, and heating and cooling cycles. So please give your input.

Here’s the test vehicle.

Here’s a list of the LSP products I have and car test.

Collinite 476, 845, and 915. 3m Performance finish (won my last successful test), Liquid glass, Techwax 2.0, Surf city nano seal, and nano glaze. Duragloss 111. Meguiars ultimate liquid wax. Klasse AIO and SG. Autoglym Hd wax (with and withour the autoglym super reisen polish). S100. Poorboy’s EX-P. Blackfire wet diamond. NU finish. Ultima Paint Guard plus. Surf city garage barrier reef. Meguiars gold class (new formula). Megs #26. Mothers pure carnuba. Pinnacle soverign liquid. Wolfgang deep gloss 3.0. several spray waxes too. Meguiars ultimate spray wax, surf city garage speed demon, surf city garage hot rod detailer, turtle wax express shine, turtle wax ice synthetic spray wax, duragloss aqua wax, and 3m quick wax.

Here is an example of how my last wax test was laid out.

• I will be comparing rain x to invisible glass with rain repellant too since I couldn’t tell any difference on my last test, both lasted well.

• Should I update weekly? Or every 2 weeks? Carwash suggestions? I have turtle wax ice wash which does not contain any wax.

My new car has summer tires, so this car will be driven when there is snow/ice/slush on the ground, keep that in mind when making any suggestions. The vehicle will spend most of its time sitting in the driveway however.

Let me know your opinions on what sort of layout you would like to see which products on and how you want it prepped. Thought about trying layering. KSG? UPGP? Anything else?

I am a full time college student, with a full time job, so if I do not respond to your suggestions right away I apologize, but I will try to make a point to check this thread every time I get online.

Test the LSP Sealants and Waxes; forget the detailer sprays. You may need to map out the LSPs applications for the sides as well and see how they hold up in comparison to the hood/roof/truck (IE Vertical surfaces verus Horizontal surfaces)

We may have to call you Accumulator II, with that many LSPs and Detailer sprays in your "collection".

With all these tests I see, people always wash regularly. Since we know a lot of those lsp's will last quite a long time, I'd like to see you go at least three months before washing it to see how they react to being dirty for quite some time.

Unwashed paint last longer than if washed regularly. Just so you know.

IMO, keep it simple. While its cool to do a wide range of products, you really can't appreciate a product with a small square. Only on the larger body contours can you see the real differences in looks. You'll note dirt shedding ability, water sheeting, etc. I say half and half or quarter the car.

Ohh... and nice new ride!:yo:

What I meant, is it would be interesting to see a test where it isn't washed regularly to see if how they react to being dirty for a long time, to see if any of them resist bonding of dirt, etc. more than others. As much as I would like to always keep my cars clean, it's tough to do so in the winter.

Scottwax and I have discussed that before....sometimes it does work out that way, but other times (other LSPs? other conditions? other shampoos? :think :nixweiss ) it doesn't.

It seems like sometimes the dirt being on there a long time somehow messes up the LSP, like...maybe the dirt retains moisture or something. Or maybe it's that a really dirty vehicle needs a more aggressive wash that a more frequently done vehicle will never require.

KSG comes to mind, the incredible durability I got from it on the MPV was despite near-weekly washing.

The M16ed A8 seems to do best with somewhat frequent (but not Autopian-nutty) washes, done pretty gently (shampoo dilution, etc.).

OTOH, washing the UPPed S8 too much simply seems to wash off the UPP along with the dirt.

But the FK1000P doesn't care how I treat it ;)
