I've had it.....factory warranty cover paint defects?

It really looks like acid rain damage and wet sanding might not be the wisest choice. The good thing is that most manufacturers will warranty this for the 1st year of the vehicle's life. The bad side is that it needs to be repainted.

David, I'm not saying this to be argumentative, but I am curious and I recognize that you're more experienced at this than I am. How can it be acid rain damage when he said in the first post that some of it looks like it might be under the clear?

In the original post, he mentions it's like tiny pits or craters. To me, that's acid rain damage. It's very unlikely that it's in the base coat or under the clear or it would look very different. The best thing to do is look at it through a paint magnifying glass to confirm. Bottom line is that wet sanding will not work and it will require repainting.

Those dots appear to be extremely small for acid rain damage. I'm not saying it's not possible, they just seem really tiny. My GTI has acid rain etching and the craters have a much larger diameter. I supose if it was just misting out then it would be tiny drops.

davela72 what are the size of the dots? Also, I will try and get an upclose picture of my g/f's car tonight since it is the same color and was purchased around the same time as yours. Are there any spots on the glass. I would think the glass would have etching as well if it were acid rain.

Good luck!

Acid rain can be all sizes, especially small. This car is a 2006 after all is relatively new/fresh. I'm sure those spot will grow over time unless they are neutralized. Acid rain won't usually damage glass either, but industrial fallout will.

Davela72 - Are the spots just on the tops of the vehicle??

David, the spots are mainly on the top surfaces, the hood appears to be the worst. i've noticed some on the roof, A pillars and tops of the fenders. i'm so tempted to give up but I know I'll have this car for a while and I really want it to look nice.

Once again, I really appreciate everyone's help with this matter.

John, that would be great if you could check out your g/f's car and see if you notice anything like this:xyxthumbs

I feel your pain. Unfortunately, it really appears that the paint is damaged and cannot be repaired without repainting. It's only going to keep growing and get worse and if repainting is a viable option for you, i'd do it before your warranty expires.

YOU NEED TO STRESS TO THE VW BODY SHOP THAT IT NEEDS TO COME OUT PERFECT WITHOUT ANY DEFECTS OF SWIRLS OR THEY WILL HAVE TO RE DO IT UNTIL IT'S RIGHT. ALSO MAKE SURE THAT ANY TRIM OR PAINT THAT ISN'T GETTING PAINTED NEEDS TO BE REMOVED, TAPED OFF AND COVERED!!! IF POSSIBLE, HAVE THEM WAIT SEVERAL WEEKS AFTER THE CAR IS PAINTED TO HAVE THEM COLOR SAND AND BUFF IT TO ENSURE THAT THE PAINT IS FULLY CURED.

Good luck.....

David, just to cover my bases, should I look into one of the decontamination systems, FK or AutoInt to neutralize the acid rain?
