It pays off to send press releases

It's working great! I've booked four details from people who saw the article and a writer contacted me today about including me in an article he's writing for a publication about how the town my shop is in is going green. This is just a little tiny weekly paper I got my article in, now to try for a more major publication.
 
How does this work? I've done page advertising in our local business courier and shell'd out a crap load of cash for little return. Is this free? Do you carpet bomb all the local papers and hope one takes?

Check out this guy's website. This page explains everything you need to know. I ended up emailing my press release to a few editors, their email is usually on the paper's website. It's 100% free publicity if they print your release.

This is the key. Newspaper advertising, for our industry, is useless. Newspaper ads generally work for retail-type industries, "iPad 2 for $499 !" type offers. What you're trying to generate in newspaper is an impulse-buy. Someone who's looking to get a detail will look to get a detail, it's pretty rare that you'll see someone go "hey there's a detailing ad, I'm gonna book one !". That said, just about ANY advertising is good advertising if it's free. In this case, the OP has also appealed to a growing market segment, those that want eco-friendly services. Many people may already know of Explicit Details, but they may not know about the eco-friendliness of it.
