It aint going clear!

Ive just moved up from my Megs 220 to a Makita rotary. So far I have done 2 full corrections one a BMW 320i and joy of joys a Ferrari 360, which I crapped myself on from start to finish. What I do notice with the rotary is that the Menzerna IP does not work clear like it used to with the orbital. I only put 3 small blobs of polish on the pad, prior to that I mist with a dilute solution of Duragloss shampoo just to moist the pad.

Is this where I am going wrong, should I use a proper detail spray or not mist at all?. Am i using too much polish for a 2 foot square section?. I do see some change in the polish but its leaving a thin greasy film behind, which i have to buff off by hand. I start at pos 1 and spread the polish then work up to pos 2-3 but no faster, which is 1500rpm. Do i need to go faster than 1500rpm. Sometimes as well the pad seems to want to "grab" the panel as it moves from left to right.

All help much appreciated, cheers John.

Its been a while since I used IP, but I don't prime a pad with anything when I use SIP or any polish with a rotary.

After claying do a prep-solv wipedown on the paint to ensure you are working with a clean surface.

What pad are you using?

Using shampoo to prime your pad sounds like the problem. Using a QD or water maybe ok, but shampoo! Shampoo is to wash with or as a clay lube, but never heard of it being used as a pad primer for polishing.

Who the hell told you to prime your pad with soap? Im with gm, I never have primed my pad with anything, not the polish, nothing. Polish gets put right on the paint. But if you insist, you should only be using distiled water.

Cheers lads, thought as much with the dilute Duragloss, lesson learnt. I was a bit nervous with the prep solve wipe down, are these just alchohol wipes?. For this correction I was using a 3m orange compounding pad. I will definatley go to my 3m stockist and purchase some prep solve wipes though.

Many thanks for the help, never to proud to ask, cheers from across the water John.

Indeed, I've been doing it 6 years. My polish goes on the paint and the fresh clean (no lube or any prespray) pad spreads it.

I aways mist my foam pads with a QD to begin with.

They can sometimes be a lttle grabby at first, FK425 seems to help it glide a little better for me......

I've never heard of shampoo being used until today though......
