I'm interested in buying my first polisher and I see from reading some posts that porter cable is one of the recommended brands of polishers. I see 2 models that are offered a 6" #7424 and a 7" #7420. So which one is the better one to get or does someone recommend another brand?
 
The 7424 is a random orbital polisher, the 7420 is a direct drive high speed rotary buffer.



Since this will be your first machine stick with the 7424. They are very safe to use. Rotary buffers like the 7420 are for more expierenced detailers and require some skill to operate. You can actually burn right through the clearcoat with a rotary if you are not careful



For someone starting out the Porter Cable 7424 is a safe choice.:up
 
I love my PC for SMR, FI II and AIO. I've also waxed with it and that worked very well and very fast too. Another little bonus is that the PC can also be used as a sander. In fact when I bought my PC from one of my tool suppliers I bought the sander which came with a backing plate and about 4 different grits of sandpaper. I'm refinishing a door in our house so I used the PC on it last night and it worked great. It's only a quick wrench change away to convert it back to a polisher. So it is really two tools in one. :up

The two machines pictured above are nearly the same thing except for the backing plate. I found that the sander had better availability from my local PC distributer. Be sure if you buy the sander to get the 7336 because it is the sander designed for a 6" plate and it has the correct counter-balance weight.

In fact since you really should buy the CMA kit with the velcro backing plate anyway, you might prefer to order the PC sander then you will be able to use the tool for sanding or polishing simply by changeing the backing plate.
 
Not to knock CMA, but Griot's PC kit is a 7336 and includes a hard case, backing plate, and other sander accessories for $199. A pretty good deal, and since you don't have to buy the velcro backing plate separately, it seems to be a pretty good value.
 
Lowes is selling the 7336 for $109 and then you can by the Kit from CMA for $59 and you will have everything you need for $168.
 
Got it from Coastal Tool for $115.00. Comes with one 5" white polishing pad.



Although all the specs and even the box says it's a 6" polisher, the 7424 comes with a counterweight for a 5" pad. This is important. Most accessory pads are 6", including the CMA kit which I bought. While a 6" pad will fit on a stock 7424, the polisher will vibrate pretty severely if you do not install the conterweight for 6" pads.



Counterweights for 6" pads can be bought at Coastal for $1.95. They are currently on backorder. You will not find this counterweight at your local Lowe's or Home Depot. Go to Porter Cable's website and search for dealers in your area. Petrhaps they'll have the 6" counterweight in stock. I just ordered from Coastal.



So here's what to buy:



1. A 7424 from whoever you want to buy it from.

2. A 6" counterweight.

3. The pad kit from CMA that includes the velcro backing plate and several pads.

- - OR - -

4. Search around for a variety of 5" pads that will screw into your 7424. I haven't found too many but then again I haven't spent days searching.



I've already used the 5" pad that comes with the 7424. It works fine for general polishing. I tried the 6" CMA pads and they worked fine too except at speeds 5 and higher. I'm thinking the 6" counterweight with 6" pads will be smoother.
