IS there any way to polish scratches out of glass by hand?

As I don't have a grarge I don't have a DA yet either. Somehow I got long (but superficial) linear scratches on my winshield. Would ordinary polish work for this application?

I have considered this same question myself. What worries me is that if the scratches are at all deep, polishing them out could leave low points that the wipers won't wipe.

~One mans opinion / observation~

This is not a product/method endorsement as I have no first hand knowledge nor have I used the products, but scratchpolish.com is a company who claims they can remove scratches from glass.

If you do decide to try this product please let us know your results.

I have probably put on over a thousand how-to clinics in my life, (easily).

Here are the top 3 questions I get asked at every clinic, in no particular order

* How can I remove a scratch in my window glass?

* How can I remove a scratch in my car's finish?

* How can I remove buffer swirl in my cars finish?

For the glass question, I can usually offer how I polish glass by hand or machine to remove film build-up and water spots, but for actual scratches *in* the glass, I recommend the only company I have ever heard that offers the products and tools to remove light abrasions *on* glass, not specifically, scratches *in* glass.

From their website,

Glass Polishing Kit Pro

Item No. - 40011

This kit can be used to clear off years of wiper haze from your windshield and save hundreds of dollars in replacement costs. Ideal for hard-to-find windshields on older cars.

Try this test:

Run your fingernail over the damaged area on your windshield. If nail doesn't catch, this kit will work.

If your nail does catch try the Deep Scratch Kit (40030). Mark the damaged area, mix the special Glass Polishing Compound with water, attach polishing buff to your drill or low speed polisher (1,500 rpm), and start polishing!

Includes: 1/4 adapter, 1 lb Glass Polishing Compound, 2 7/8" x 1" Thick Buffing Wheel.

Regular Price: $34.99

Hope this helps...

Thanks for the responses guys. I will start out with the scratchpolish.com stuff as they offer a "sample pack" of the hand-applied stuff for $10. I am skeptical, though. If that doesn't do the trick I will move up the ladder to the more costly and involved methods.

I always wanted to try that Eastwood kit, but dont have a machine to run it. I'm going to use PB Pro Polish and my PC and see what happens.

SCOTT P,

How did you make out using the PP and the PC on windows? I was thinking of doing the samething just to get them clean of the normal maring that occurs in the winter but didnt know if the cleaning agents in the PP and the PC might cause more marring?

I got some cerium oxide from a lapidary shop. It's a fine, pink powder. It's to be mixed with water, to form a paste. It will polish glass.

Well the scratchpolish.com people aren't doing such a great job. I ordered almost 2 weeks ago and I haven't gotten an order confirmaiton or the product yet. I just emailed them...getting a little po'ed.
