Is the XP worth it?

Now I'm choosing between the porter cable 7424 and the 7424xp. With the new coupon code out there, I can get the 7424 for 80 dollars. That's really cheap and I am eager to place my order. I could go with the XP, but that costs more, and I am wondering if it's really worth it.

Remember, I am an amateur, not a professional, so durability isn't an issue since I'd only be using it a couple times a year. The info says that the XP is better at breaking down polishes, but is this something you'd really notice, and how would that apply to non-abrasive polishes?
 
if i were in the market for a new D/A, i would choose the 7424XP. more power and a three year warranty is hard to beat. you don't want a case of, "i should of gotten the ____ instead"...
 
Never used the XP, but I have a Makita Rotary and a 7424. My 7424 hardly gets used for anything but final polishing. If the XP is more powerful, GET IT. The 7424 is capable of a lot, but once you've used something more powerful like a rotary (and maybe like the XP), you won't even want to deal with anything weaker again most of the time.
 
If my UDM were to die today, I would immediately start looking for an XP. While it may not have the power of a Flex, it is much cheaper, it can handle smaller pads, I can use my carpet brushes on it and it has more power than the old PC.
 
Wait - the UDM is different than the XP? I knew the speed adjustment was in a different place and some minor differences than that, but I had no idea that it was less effective then the XP?

I was thinking the UDM was closer in performance to the 7424 personally. But what do i know? :think2

the original UDM (not the one available now) was similiar to that of the G110 etc., and now the current UDM (that is being sold now), is the same as the 7424 IIRC. i wouldn't make things more complicated, i would just get the 7424XP...
 
Yes, I just upgraded. I had the 7424 for 5 or 6 years. the XP is definately worth it.

I got mine last week from Detailers Domain ( Phils the Man , 1 day ) I got the uber 5.5 pad set. Noise level down considerably, power definately up and better vents. Do it !!
 
After using a PC for the first 5 months of this year I got a XP. I guess I need to do a side by side, as I really don't notice that much of a difference in power.

Interesting. This is the first I have heard of someone saying they cannot tell a difference.
 
I got my XP in this week and tried it out on some moderately oxidized Toyota paint. I was blown away by the results it yielded over the original 7424. The extra power does a lot for it.
 
It's a very nice tool and I really like the smaller body. It fits in your hand well, (at least in my hand), and is easy to use without the handle.

For components like the mirrors, brace them with one hand while polishing them with the other hand. The new smaller, ergonomic shape of the Porter Cable 7424XP makes doing this kind of work easy.

For $80 I'd buy the older model. IF you want more power jump to a Flex. BTW, I find my Ridgid 2611 to correct better and finish better than the PC. It is a bit more awkward to use though.
 
I've only heard good things about the flex, but it's just way too expensive for me. Late last week I placed my order for the XP, so we'll see what happens.
