Is soap just soap ??

Dewey,Cheatem & Howe ESQ.
I have a local chemical guy here in town that makes cleaners/wax/soap.He has a great wheel cleaner,GP cleaner and the wax is OK.

He makes a wash and wax product that contains no wax or 1 flake of wax but has lots of silicone.The silicone is what the customers judge the product on.This being said the reason the car looks waxed is the silicone and not lots of wax.Could be this is liquid wax, but any wax that is emulsified has a lower amount of the product "wax" in it.:inspector:.Sure the soap foams up,cleans,and beads water after but is there any real wax protection.

Lets ask the experts.:inspector:
 
Haha - let's bring back the silicone debates from a few years ago. :D

Just from what I have read and my personal experience, silicone is a very short term product that will definitely enhance gloss but won't last very long. Usually, once the car is wet again (wash, rain) the silicone is gone. I think it is used in a good variety of products, and I don't think there's anything "wrong" with using it - as long as it's used for what it is and not marketed as something else.

Lets face the facts 1 flake of wax in a drum is enough for a manufacturer to say the product contains "wax" and I guess that silicone is what we all think is the wax.

I am not a chemist but there are tricks to every trade.:eek:
 
Tricks of the trade shouldn't lend themselves to deceptive marketing or advertising. not saying that's what you were implying by any means - just that there was a pretty big debate on this subject a few years back, and it seemed that's what the fuss was about (mostly).

As in the guidelines for any manufacture, they must conform to certain restrictions on the amounts of ingredients...if they say it contains wax..then it has some level of wax...It would be more interesting to see what those guidelines are, for car care products.

Just as an example with processed food..the ingredients list starts with the product that is the highest content and listed in order to the least.
