Is my paint coming off?!?

Mmm Yellow
I just washed my car yesterday with "simple green" car wash mix, and a sponge, and left it to dry on its own after rinsing without driving it. (not the regular simple green all purpose cleaner, this is an actual car wash that's advertised to be safe for any finish) Today, I look and discover that there is a covering of very fine yellow grains of roughly identical size all over the hood, windshield, and roof!

Last two times I washed the car I applied nu-finish car polish. Would this have anything to do with it? Can using an abrasive polish cause the paint to come off in a fine grains? I'm not sure if that's what Nu-Finish is, but I'm now thinking that maybe it's because last time after I washed I applied Nu-Finish, then wiped it off but didn't rinse or anything, and this time when I washed, it carried away the loose paint the abrasive took off?

Very concerned about this, anyone have any ideas?

Hard to imagine without a picture. So post one up please. You will always want to dry after you wash. Dry with a waffle weave microfiber towel, not a bath towel. Post a pic up so we can better tell what it is.

WELCOME btw

Greg

Are the grains the same color as your sponge? I use the same car soap and have no problems with what you're taking about, in fact I think it's a pretty good wash, nice lather. I even use it for clay lube.

Not familiar with Nu-finish, But i doubt this is your problem either. Could be your sponge...some sponges have "sponge dust" in them when new from them being cut.....I personally would throw away the sponge and get a good quality mitt. Sponges harbour swirls and they'll jump out onto your paint before you know it:) Also, the grains could be just debri floating around in the wind....but as Greg says, it's hard to tell without a pic.

Here you go. It's not nearly as bad as it looks in the pictures, because I think the flash just really brings out and causes overexposure on anything bright colored, but it's definitely there. I've already driven the car and havn't attempted to rinse or wipe it yet, so they seem to have collected at the bottom of the windows. The last picture is some specks on the roof rack mounting rails (I don't have a roof rack).

Thanks...

And by the way, I don't dry it after washing because it's always parked outside anyway, and is rained on a lot because I have no garage space, so I don't see any point to drying it.

Also here are some pics of my car after it was washed. I just hope that shininess wasn't due to the top layer of paint being removed!! :bawling:

Odds are your car is a single stage paint, meaning no clear coat and the simple green,. which is way to harsh, is pulling the dead paint off. You need to spend some serious time reading the boards and get some better products.

Do you really think so? I know the car is indeed single stage paint, but this stuff is actually advertised specifically as car wash. I've used dish detergent to wash before and nothing like this happened...

Here is what I suggest that you do. Go get yourself some Meguairs Gold Class car wash soap and a good sheepskin wash mit. You can get these at Target or Wallmart. Then get yourself a bottle of Megs (There are many other products but you should be able to get these locally) fine or medium cut compound and apply by hand with a foam applicatior. Then get some Megs NXT Tech wax or some mothers reflections. Take that Nu Finsh and throw it in the neighbors yard and never look back. This is very very very simple view of what needs to be done just as a basic.

You really should get a PC, and some Klasse AIO and then that will really shine that ride up.

It could just be dust and pollen collecting where your car was still wet. Try drying with a QD the next time you wash. It might take care of your problem in less time than polishing (although you'll want to do this sometime soon anyway). Try it and see how it works.

Nu-Finish is pretty crappy, but it doesn't have yellow residue and won't make your paint flake off. I would move on from Nu-Finish--just about any Paste Wax seems more expensive, but really isn't because of the product amount you use.

Move on to a better car wash, and use that stuff on your wheels, wheel wells, door jambs, etc.

Any time an abrasive polish is used, it takes of "paint," or the topcoat--whether it is paint or clear coat. The damage is minimal, but there is some dust, especially in red, orange, and yellow cars. Your products aren't too abrasive, but your paint may need attention. How does it feel when it is clean?
