Is it safe and what to use?

to paint the wheels under the hub caps. I am talking about a ford fiesta that does not have alloys but wheel covers. If I take off the wheel covers then the metal underneath is rusted, and I was thinking what I could do with this bare metal. I was thinking of applying Amorite, you know that metal garden furniture stuff! I really have no idea what to do with these?

I am pretty certain that several of you will know exactly what to apply, so thanks in advance :)

I don't think there would be a problem with it. Just make sure to clean all the rust off before you paint, or you're not fixing the problem, just covering it up. That stuff for outdoor furniture might work, but I'd probably put some engine paint or brake paint on them. That will be just as durable. I don't think the heat factor on the wheel itself should be much of a concern.

Axe - I think the only issue will be weight of the paint. I know it might not seem much, but a coat of hammerite will be a few grams worth and it might just be enough to put the wheel out of balance. If this is a customer detail, you wouldn't want to give them it back only for it to shake about - not do your reputation any good.

I know the type of ford wheels you mean - personally I'd rub them down and use some VHT engine paint in a spray can - and just live with the fact that in the UK, at this time of the year, with all the salt on the road etc - that steel wheels will just plain rust!

thanks gkerr :)

Its not a customer detail, someone far more important than that, its my wifes. I have just Z'd her car, she is so thrilled ... but I noticed when I did it that her wheels were badly in need of some attention.

VHT engine paint ... where from then ? Halfords ?

Ta

Yeah - halfords, or any motor factor really. a few quid for a can, sheild the tyre and bobs yer uncle!

Where you from by the way - can't be too far from me if you describe yourself as NW Coast.

I can see your tower across the beach, and many people have drowned trying to walk across to blackpool from this part of the coast .. I know you know where I am now :)

Thanks for the hint, any prep on the wheel? Wire brush maybe ?

i know where you are!

I'd just use a wire brush i think. it will remove enough corrosion and give a good prep for the spray paint.

Nice 330i by the way!! - I have a 2001 318i SE in titanium silver. they are nice cars! I would love the 330 but too much money for me in the six cylinder ones!

Thanks for the compliments on the car, it is also a 2001, straight 6 cylinders are great so smooth, although if you have to commute any distance forget that ... 19 - 23 MPG ! Just in the process of Zaino'ing it, to see what if any improvement Z will give over AG, I am hoping for great things!

318i SE nice car, gotta love beemers, so driveable. Haha I took mine out today after washing it to dry it off, 135mph and a 10mph head wind, that was enough to blow the damp bits away! However, now you know why I have damage to my wing mirrors :(
