Is it possible to wear through the clearcoat?

I have an black '01 Volkswagen GTI. The clearcoat on the car does not seem very durable and the paint scratches very easily if I do not dust or remove a product very carefully with the right towel. Does anyone know if it is possible to wear the clearcoat right off using a PC or other tools? Thanks

If it is going to happen, chances are it will be on an edge before you see it anywhere else. If you are really worried about this, you might want to invest in a paint thickness gauge.

I do the 3-step process usually about every 3 months and that is when I use the PC. The paint just seems to scratch so fricken easily, like if I take my fingernail and very lightly rub the paint, it will scratch the surface.

I THINK that sealents and wax help alot protecting a cars surface against scratches. When the paint is bear its probally alot softer compared to a sealent and wax on top of clearcoat.

Are you sure that the scratches are in the clear itself or could they possibly be in the protectants you had previously applied to the paint? I have a '00 Jetta and it's not as susceptable to scratching as my Integra was (which didn't seem to scratch that easily as well).

Don't worry my good man. You will not wear through your CC by using towels, and a PC would take years to burn through. A high speed buffer would go through CC like butter if you don't know how to use it. I agree with what someone else said, if you are keeping enough wax on the car, you might be scratching the wax. If you are, these scratches should disappear when you clay or surface clean before reapplying. Keep with your routine, you are doing the right thing.:xyxthumbs

I once had my car so waxed, I coudlnt even scratch it even if I tried, and i did try. Someone keyed my car, and it sure looked as if they sure put some real pressure to the key. Came right of with some wax. Most of it though. By then I didnt know much about scratch repair.

Since your car is pretty new I would have thought your CC should be in good health. So unless you know of abuse with a rotary buffer or something I'd not worry about it.

About the paint scratching very easily, I am with you on that. I never touch the paint let alone rub it when it is dry (I know better now).

BTW as far as I know VW paint is much harder and durable than most others, I know it is much tougher than BMW paint for example. I used to drive a 2000 GTI VR6 and after 2 years of washing every week it still looked like just came out of the show room.
