Interesting Issue with 05 Vette

Hey guys,



I am finally detailing my 2005 Corvette. Car is black. I am running into a very interesting issue. Car is daily driven so I am not being to particular, but at the same time I would have expected different results. Here is my process.



Wash with Dawn

Clay Bar

Wash with Dawn

M105 on LC Orange

Optimum Polish II on LC White

Optimum Final Finish on LC Black

Zaino Z5 Pro

Z8



I am to be honest the M105 was a great knock out punch for the heavy swirling and random scratches after the car being outside un waxed for two years however I am very unimpressed with both optimum products. I found the Optimum Polish to do very little on my GM clear and I really don't think the Final Polish did anything at all.



What's interesting is that the issue I am having is not with the heavy swirling but with light swirling??? Under a halogen the paint looks like a mirror, and my reflection is clear once more; however if I look down the side of the car I can see with looks like spots of oil in a few places and extremely light swirls, maybe even holograms. You would figure with such a light cut on such a hard clear this outcome would be impossible yet I find myself looking at what I believe to be either swirls or more likely holograms. I did a IPA wipe down before the Zaino so its not likely it is oil. Maybe its the fact that I used very little Final polish (felt like I was using a lot actually) , and its buffer burn marks.



I've done about 20 intensive details to date and have NEVER run into this. I can live with it because in the shade the car is like a mirror, and in the sun its blinding but nonetheless it has me scratching my head. Next time Ill know better and just stick with my 105/205

I'm not well versed all that much with Optimum polishes, just more or less with their compounds, but the spots almost appear to be from not working the product in enough. (speculating?) I know many people who swear by them too as they have great results. Maybe, because the clear is hard on these cars it required a firmer pad and more work time to see appropriate results? You might want to try calling Dr. G or PMing Chris from Optimum for a more in-depth opinion unless someone else can chime in.

Rotary. And I don't see how you could possibly work this polish any more. The pad starts to squeek after a while and builds heat super fast. I was using extra to keep that pad lubed and at times introducing a spritz of distilled water to keep it going. M105/M205 has a good work time, and even though there is a lot of oil in 205 at least you don't have to worry about overworking it. I would be willing to try it again on a different paint but I can't remember the last time I did a non GM car. Even the car I do that aren't mine always seem to be GM's

I'd call Dr. G and get his opinion on this. Sounds strange that their polishes didn't work. I'm sure he'll have some kind of answer for you that can shed some light on this.
 
Did you use the new spray version of Optimum Hyper Polish? It has more cut than Optimum Polish II. There is a newer version of the Final Polish too, if yours is more than a year old, you don't have the current version. The one I have gives "oh my God" wetness to the paint.
