Insurance quote input, please

Hey guys, I just got my first quote on some garage keepers insurance for my business. Since you all are a great wealth of knowledge, I thought I'd get your input on the quote. Also, what other reputable companies should I check with?

This is from a local SafeCo rep:

Here is a summary of premium:

Auto: $845

GL: $550

IM: $221

Total Package: $1,616

General Notes:

* Hired and Non-owned as add to cover the liability exposure if the insured operates his clients outs

* The Garage Keeper’s legal liability was increased to $45,000. WBMI doesn’t have rates for $40,000 limit.

* Replacement Cost was quoted on the Tools floater. If coverage was reduced to Actual Cash Value the IM rate would be reduced by 10%.

* No sales figure was provided so we used $100,000. Call if you wish to adjust.

* The Gl limits have been set at $1m agg / $1m occ. Call if you wish to adjust.

Thanks in advance for any input!

I should probably know more about my policy than I currently do, but although I don't know all of the ins and outs, I can tell you this much.

My policy is with Acuity. I have a $1,000,000 general liabilty policy with garage keepers included. In addition to my mobile detailing business, we also have a cleaning business (offices, houses, apartment communities) and they are both covered under the policy.

It runs me between $600-700 per year. You may want to check into them, and they do have a website at acuity.com. I too am located in Indiana and so I do therefore know that they offer policies in the area.

Hope that helps!

Thanks mcc, I just contacted an Acuity agency in Carmel. Turns out the guy I talked to lives in Brownsburg, where I live. Hopefully, he'll give me some good numbers :)

Cool, I hope you can save some money. They seemed to provide good service and beat every other price I got by a considerable amount. At one point we had a policy with American Family, but they kept raising our rates despite the fact that we had never filed a claim or had any issues at all. We have had no such problems with Acuity to this point.

Hi I'm new to the board. But have been reading for some time.I currently brought a cleaning franchise. At the time I wasn't sure if I should choose detailing or jantorial.I picked jantorial, but I'm sure if made.. the right decession.Could you give me some feed back on the detailing side from your persoal experience?

Thank you for your time, and best of luck with your business.

First, welcome to you 10bballer. :welcome I'm fairly new here too, although I lurked for a long time before I finally posted.

This is just my experience and my opinion. So, take it for what it is worth and remember that you asked for it. :)

First, I would never buy a cleaning franchise. I'm not giving someone else my money on a regular basis in addition to a large up front payment. That's just not my style. I have had many businesses over the years (I'm only 30), some have prospered, some failed, just the way it goes. In all of those businesses, I started them myself, and most I start for well under $1000. From then on all of the money was mine...............well, and the IRS's.

Anyway, I personally would go into a janitorial business before I would a detailing business. You can get customers much faster, from what I've seen a larger segment of the population uses such services, and it is just easier to get going. It can also make you a lot of money if you do it right. You can clean offices, houses, vacant apartments, entire apartment communities, banks, car dealerships, etc. You can branch into pressure washing, window washing, etc. On the flip side, my mobile detailing business has been much harder to get going. Some of it depends on the perception in your area and how much people value their cars. Here, not so much. People think that if they get a $5 car wash and add the spray wax, that is all they will ever need. Detailing typically costs me more in supplies, and it is more of a headache to market, than the cleaning business I have. Oh, and cleaning businesses also typically involve much more regular work, so you know what you have coming in each week.

So, to sum up, I hope your cleaning business works out for you. With the backing of a franchise, I hope you have the volume of work that you need, if not, you should. If you want to drive yourself crazy for a few years trying to build enough clientele to start a detailing business, start it on the side part-time and realize that it is going to be a long road, unless of course you are willing to do dealer work for the next to nothing that they want to pay you for. That is one way to get volume, but I don't think its worth it.

Why do I detail then? Because I like it, and the work I get is priced well for me, or I don't take it. If I can make more money doing something else, that is what I'll do. In fact, I do other things beside cleaning and detailing as well to bring in some money. You gotta hustle to make it.

I guess that is enough of my rant. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.
