instead of a tent, how about a tarp?

Hey all.



My friend and I are just preparing to finally get our first use out of the new PC we just got. We're doing his sister's 94 Golf on saturday. we have a problem with space and light... his garage is kinda small, and has only one incandescent light bulb lighting the whole thing (this is a project that will come later... more light!!). We were thinking about an EZ-UP type of solution, but that'll cost way to much for us. Then my friend came up with the idea of using a white tarp anchored to his house on one end, and posts on the other, like you would do with a trailer when u go camping (if u have a trailer). my question is, do you think this would be adequate shade from the heat of the sun to polish and wax, or will it still be too hot?

should be ok. Just make sure those posts are secure. You don't want to have to draw us one of those fancy picture of what one of them posts looks like after they fell on/dented your sisters golf, ya know:o
 
If you can find one and afford it, you will find that a silver tarp with dk brown reverse side will provide much more protection than a standard white one. Just something to think about!
 
you can always do it in the evening with a work light. Actually, I get better results this way. The 1000W of light makes cleaning windows easier and shows swirls & missed spots as well.
 
Ya, we've definitely got a few ways of going about it. I suggested a black tarp to my friend, but I haven't done a lot of looking around for different colours.
 
I have done this before with a 12 x 20' tarp and it works fine.



Use 2 x 2 with duplex head nails and use 4 down the side .. I just showed 2. I used nylon rope and 10" nails in the lawn to pull it tight. The tarps have hole down the sides just put the nail thats in the end of the 2 x 2 through the hole and hook the rope over it then attach to the spike in the ground.



Sorry the dwg is poor but I had 3 minutes to put it together.

Don't get a black one, it will cook you underneath it. You want the white or silver to reflect the sun. The thing about the silver with dark underside is the silver reflects the majority of the suns rays, and the dark underside keeps the rest from coming through. I have camped under white, silver, and silver with dark brown reverse side and it is by far the best way to go. We're probably talking 8- 10 degrees difference.

lawdog - ya, i was thinking black would probably get hot. i've found white no prob, but never seen a silver one around here. i'll have to look around

The 1000 watt halogens are a real godsend. In fact, perhaps you could just keep the car in the garage if you get a hold of one of these to use there.
