Initial Thoughts on Sonus SFX

blkZ28Conv,

DO NOT say that I did not try to solve the problems I was having. I varied the amount of product I used, I tried misting the pad prior to application, I varied my speeds, and I varied the work time. Nothing I did made the product more user friendly. While I enjoy the time I take to detail cars, I have other things to do besides trying to get a nice finish from a product that will not cooperate. Switching to Poorboy's was so I could get the job done with equal results.

I have two SUVs to do in the coming weeks. I'll try the SFX products again on one of them. Would on the car I'm working on right now but my sister needs it back and I already applied the sealant.

I wonder if it is really necessary to wipe off sfx1 completely. I'd think that it would've mostly broken down at the end of the polishing and that residual amounts can be cleaned up by following with sfx2 and 3. I think that alex ruiz's suggestion is a good one, which would give a better estimation of how easy sfx is to use as a system. an example would be the 3M polishes.. Finesse-it II is effective and is a pain to wipe off completely, but following with 3M SMR clears everything up and everything looks spectactular in the end.

Great reviews, tw85 hhi! sorry for busting your chops earlier about the hazing versus flashing terminology.. I just wanted to have a clear understanding of what was happening. :)

TW85 HHI

Sorry. Not busting your chops either. You just did not state all the variations you tried or I missed them while reading this post. :nixweiss

If you did everything you stated there is not much more you can do either then raymond's system suggestion.

As stated before good review, especially now with all the blanks filled in. :xyxthumbs

I just got my SFX1 pads in today. I might be able to tackely my mom's trunk and upper panels tomorrow (hod was done a while ago with what used to be an LC cutting pad... R.I.P.). If I have time, I'll write up my thoughts. Initial thoughts of the pads are that I love how the velcro covers the ENTIRE (not even a 1/2" uncovered edge like on the regular Sonus pads), and it seems very sturdy. I guess I'll see tomorrow.

Blkz28Conv, check out the VA meet thread. link in my signature.

I'd be the first one to post a picture for you, but my camera is in D.C. with my dad right now. He should be back this weekend, (Fri night actually). If you haven't seen it yet, I'll post a picture in this thread, or the one I post with my own review.

I think it's in D.C... :hmm

Well, we've all seen the picture in the Autopia store, but they just usually look different in real life and I'd like to see a close up of the back of the pad.

For the people who own the current Sonus pads, you what I'm talking about when I say they look different than the pictures.

This is the SFX3 pad. The other two are with my other pads waiting to be washed.

The blue pad is the same build as the yellow, and I assume the SFX2 as well. It kind of gets smaller towards the face of the pad. In the last pic, you can see where the velcro takes up the entire back side of the pad.

Thanks for the pictures! It looks like all you need to do now is center the PC perfectly and then trace your backingplate with a black marker so you have a bullseye to use each time.

Centering the pad shouldnt be a problem, since its designed for use on a D.A machine

Do you mean you don't center your pads? What kind of perfectonist do you think you are???:nono

Just kidding, Eric, good to see you on here!:xyxthumbs

Interesting. what diameter are the pads?

I have a 6" backing plate but it seems like the Sonus pads are all made for 5"...and I really don't want to buy another backing plate if I can just buy another pad for that price from a different maker.

Thanks for the good initial review though. I'm waiting for more from you and from the others that got in on this testing :)

I don't see any reason why you can't use a 6" backing plate. I personally prefer the 5" plate over the 6" but it still works just fine.

I think you would risk damaging the pad if you use a 6" backing plate on the DAS pads. The SFX pads are slightly smaller in diameter than the DAS pads but with 100% velcro coverage. I'd stick with pads designed for 6" backing plates or switch to a 5" plate.

The problem is that if you pull on the edges of the velcro of the pads it causes it to seperate from the foam. :(
