Information from and about 303

Has anyone else tried Purple Power? Mixed 50/50 with water it does an awesome job on tires, wheels(even break dust), engine area, bug removal and even on tough carpet stains. As a apc I have not found anything better. I had a chemist friend at a local State University do an analysis for me and though it came out a bit on the acid side(thats when I started the 50/50 mix) I have not had it harm anything in over a year of regular use. I do not suggest leaving it on paint too long because it will remove any wax or sealants that are there and cause streaking as a result. I spray it on wheels, tires and engine area with a garden sprayer and use it on a cotton towel when doing bug removal in painted areas or trim cleaning. You can find it at most Auto stores and buying by the gallon is quite economical. I do a lot of Porches, BMW's and MB's and have not had it harm anything. Just something you might want to check out. Just some thoughts on cleaners:

Simple Green and Eimann are high pH cleaners (alkaline) and when used at high strength are very difficult to rinse away.

303's MSDS states it is incompatible with alkaline pH's, thus if you wash with SG, then fail to completely rinse it away the 303 will not bond to the plastic/vinyl. Secondly, high pH cleaners will STRIP THE PLASTICIZERS OUT OF VINYL AND PLASTIC! If you stip the plasticizers out, they become brittle and crumble.... just like in Natty's example. Dyes bond to the plastic and can be stripped away (sometimes) with high pH cleaners.

Acid does not remove grease! Citrus cleaners are usually pH balanced and it's the limonene in them that acts to solubulize the grease for water removal. Cheap cleaners will have fewer natural acids removed (it's costly to separate them out) and will not add buffers to neutralize pH.

Most APC's are pH balanced and use surfactants, detergents, chelators, and emulsifiers. They make hydrophobic molecules more soluble in water so they can be rinsed away.

BIFF:

You may wish to simple replace the handles and use 303 from day one.

Or-

If you're brave gently scrub with a light compound or plastic cleaner (3M) so as not to ruin the texture on the finish. If it's smooth plastic get 2000 grit wet/dry and go to town! Finish with plastic cleaner and plastic polish to recreat new look. 303 to maintain it.
