Incentives for removing personal belongings?

I think a good way to save your time and attention for the car is to give a five to ten dollar discount for customers who remove all their personal belongings before you detail their interior. Taking a customers stuff out and putting it back inside in a organized fashion can often amount to a total of 30 minute of time that could have been spent elsewhere. Just an idea. Tell me what you think.

By rewarding customers instead of punishing them (charging an extra five to ten dollars for not removing their personal belongings) I think they would be more willing to do so with more acceptance.

I have not had a problem with too much clutter in a vehicle.

There are the occasional couple here and there, but they are VERY good customers, so to me, taking an extra 5-10 minutes to take everything out and replace is not a big deal to me....

I understand where your coming from. I think it is always important to exceed your customers expectations. Do you usually put everything in a box or bag sitting in the passenger seat or do you actually put everything where it was before you touched the car?

I like this idea. Currently I put all their stuff in a bag, and put it in the trunk. I tell them I put all their stuff in a bag in the trunk. They usually say "oh, ok, I will probably throw most of it out anyway". Hah. :)

i've had a few where i placed everything in large resealable bags for them...after that i've requested everyone to remove as much as they can before dropping off the car. not only does it speed things up for me, but i don't like touching personal belongings if i don't have to. not that i am worried about being accused of taking something (i know most of my customers)...but it's one less thing to worry about.

I carry gallon ziplock bags with me. Throw their stuff and they can see what they want to keep and what to throw away.

Buy 'em at the dollar store.

I have plastic "Thank You" t-shirt bags like you get at the grocery store that all personal items get placed in. Sure, its annoying and time consuming to bag and replace personal items but its something that I normally just deal with.

If the client takes the time to clean out their vehicle before they bring it in, I'll spend more time 'detailing' on their vehicle, which is what I want to do. Sadly, if I spent an hour cleaning out someone's car before I can even start vacuuming I'll admit I don't do as good of a job as with the previous example. In rare situations I'll charge an extra $20 spot for 'removal of personal items'. My time is money.

I put everything in my truck, then put it all in the back seat when I am done. Sometimes the trunk with soda flats. (cardboard deals that hold four 6-packs.....know what I am talking about?)

I wlli usually put everything in a bag of some sort and throw it in the truck. Then let them know it's there. Not a big problem.....It take a couple minutes to do and I am happy to have the business!

I think the best approach to this idea is telling your customer before you actually do their first detail because otherwise they may be aggrevated that you didn't give them the oppurtunity to save money.

I think the one to two minutes spent telling your customer about this option would be beneficial for both of you; they are saving their money while you have more time to spent on more important issues. There are things that customers will always obviously have in their car like their insurance papers and manual but regardless there are cars I run into where this would probably be a win-win for both of us.
