He left his car window open a crack and it started raining, now he's complaining that mildew/mold is growing and it's smelling really really really bad.

I'm thinking about just going in with my wet/dry vac, taking some Meguiar's all purpose, or Meguiar's citri cleaner where I need it and just cleaning it up like I would a regular interior

Is this about right or do I need to do something special too?

Some sort of auto carpet shampoo with a disinfectant to kill the germs. Does EF have one? not sure have to check and post back.

well i just came back from the meguiar's seminar and talked to the meguiar's rep (darrel if any of you guys care) and he pretty much told me i'm SOL

cleaning it will never totally remove the mold/mildew, it'll get the smell out but it'd come back

gotta take the car to a dealer and put it through an ozone machine or sumptin

No I think it can be removed.

Just scrub it with shampoo. Make sure its dry. Then try some bleach for coloured frabric. (Colour safe bleach)

For finishing touches, spray some lysol on it.

It's a PITA, but it can be done. Depending on what is affected (seats, carpet, etc.), some removals may be required. If it's the carpet, you should consider taking out the seats and thoroughly cleaning the carpet. My son's Cavalier leaked and the carpets got soaked, and it reeked of that moldy mildew smell. We had to remove the seats, and pull up the carpet as best as we could. Then we let it air dry until it was completely dry. The padding was the worst. Sprayed the affected areas with a germ killer (can't remember the name) - the padding underneath and the carpet on the top. Cleaned the carpet using a rental unit from the hardware store (using upholstry attachments) and did the seats while I was at it. Installed the seats and all was well. It will take a weekend, but the results are worth it.

Think about using one of the stain/odor removers for pets. They sell a product called Nature's Miracle at pet stores and it has natural enzymes that remove smells. Hey, it removed a few spots and associated smells where a new cat made his mark in my house. If it can remove the smell of cat urine, then it should work for you!
