Hi everyone,

I've been reading for days now on PC's. The search engine turned up soo much info and now I'm more confused than ever! So, here's what I understand so far. Please let me know if I'm going about this the right way. :)

The tool:

Which model? From all the messages I've read though I believe its the 7336. But I've also seen people talk about 7335, 7424, etc.. and people are talking about different size pads with different combo counterweights. My head is spinning! Which model and why please! :)

The pads:

Okay.. I think the best route for me is the kit from CMA. But would it fit with a 7336 or is it designed for a 7424? And do they ship to Canada?

Thanks for any help. I love this site! :D

You can get a 7336, then get the pad kit from cma. Everything will work correctly. If you call, I believe CMA will now ship to canada.

Hi Spin, welcome! :wavey

Get the 7336, which has the heavier 6" counterweight. You don't want any of the other models which have the lighter 5" one. Phone around local stores under "Tools" and "Building Supplies" in the phone book for the best price. About $175 is a good price.

For pads, the best advice I can say is to try phoning up CMA and see how much it is to ship one of their kits up here. Pads (Meguiar's) are so much more expensive up here (even if you shop around) that it might be a better deal and less hassle to just get CMA to ship it up - even with shipping costs and taxes.

Like most of the pads people use here, they are 6.5" and this kit comes with a backing pad. BTW, if you get this kit, ask them to substitute the terry bonnets for MF ones.

Hope this helps. :)

I can relate to your confusion. I ended up buying the 7424 with both the 5" and 6" counterweights from Coastal Tools for $119 and then ordering the CMA pads. Still not sure if I did the right thing.

Outlaw Titan,

Funny you just bought that from coastal- I was about to do the same thing. Why are you not so sure? What are your trepidations?

John

I did exactly the same as Titan.

There is only one Porter Cable random orbital polisher.

The 7424, 7424SP, 7336, 7336SP? only denote what comes in the case besides the unit.

The 7424 package includes the 5" counterweight (needs torx driver to change).

The 7424SP package is the 7424 with the backing plate and some other goodies.

The 7336 package includes the 6" counterweight.

So, buy any of the models and get the counterweights, backing plate, pads, etc seperately and TADA you have the other model.

I heavily sugget getting the PC + kit from coastaltool.com for $120. Very good deal.

Thanks Frederf - good to know.

The only trepidation I had was my lack of knowledge about what I am doing or have bought. After I use the thing I am sure I will be more at ease with my purchase. Hopefully I will get to my car soon. Getting ready to put the 2nd coat of SG on my wife's car this weekend and then hope to get going on mine. I have some DACP to use the PC with but I need to do some minor touch up work first.

I just picked up the 7424 from Coastal and have been cleaning and polishing anything without legs. This is an easy device to master. There is nothing to be afraid of...Think of it as an extension of your hand.

The first thing I did was stick on the wool pad and start it at 3 1/2...BFD! I held my hand against the pad and laughed. I called my kid into the room to check it out. I then added the terry bonnet and began polishing the furniture....the next day I used a white pad and some #9 and polished the riding mower. I then hand applied P21S, but buffed it off with the terry bonnet. Amazing!

Do not fear this wonderful tool. Next up...my Lexus!

Thanks everyone for the replies!

4DSC: Your "Definitive PC Accessorizing thread" from your sig is awesome! There's so much useful information there. Thanks for the CMA links.. I'll give them a call today!

So I'll be getting the 7336 and the CMA Kit! Can't wait to get at my car. :)

the only other question is that I see some a model called the Ultimate 7424....selling for $149.95. What is that?
That's just a 7424 with a velcro plate and one pad. Whoop-de-doo. :p It's a CMA thing, not a separate PC model.

You're welcome spincycle - good luck, and enjoy. :)

PS: Maybe you have to complain about the coarseness of the terry bonnets first? :nixweiss That's kinda how it sounds sometimes, and why people substituted it in the first place.

Hey thanks Brian

I guess the only other things I need are the velcro plate and some pads.. Any other suggestions?

I really appreciate your help.

Hmm, none come to mind at the moment...

-PC with 6" weight

-velcro backing pad/plate

-pads appropriate to your jobs

Other than a box or something to keep it all in, I guess that'd be all you need.

one dealer here sells the 7336 for $99 but the 7424 sells for $159... he says they bring a hundred of the 7336 at a time in so the price is a lot cheaper than the 7424 which he brings in only 6 at a time. Says people prefer buying the basic tool and outfitting it as they wish. Only thing is they don't sell any of the pads, gotta go online for it.
