I Need a Reccomendation on Shop Vac Power & Hose Size Please!

I would greatly appreciate your input as to what would be the ideal hp rating in a shop vac, and what size hose should I go with (meaning the diameter of the hose). There's two size hose available. I'll call one "small" and the other "large" to keep things simple. Currently, I run a small hose from a 2.5 hp shop vac, but need to buy a new one. Any help would be appreciated. I also ask because on another forum, a member said anything below 5.5 hp on a vac is worthless. So, I guess I've been vacuuming all this time with a worthless vacuum?

I prefer the bigger units because they seem more stable when you tow them around.  I've got a "quiet" series Shop Vac.  Probably ten years old.  I purchased the Gore-tex (washable) filter for it and it's got good suction, wet or dry.
 
The Rigid WD1450 is supposed to be great; lots of power, cheap and quiet. I have a Rigid Pro Pack (small rectangular vac) and it's been great along with the detailer accessory hose & attachments.
 
I've been using my 6.5hp Rigid since 2004, with the standard 2.5"? hose, but I bought a 25' long one from Lee Valley... that way I dont have to move the vaccuum.


 


Always get the most power you can afford with vacuums, is my opinion :)
 
The "horsepower" has nothing to do with it's sucking abilities really. It's the water lift or sealed pressure you want, and also cfm. Extractors have atleast 100" of water lift. The vacuums you get in store lack in water lift. My powr flite pf51 vacuum is a beast at 100" of water lift and 113 cfm
