I need a good rubber cleaner.

Sorry for confusing the issue, no I haven't tried the Griots, so I don't know. Personal bias against mail ordering if I don't have to, that's all..... :o



If you want to try the Griots and people have said it's good, then go for it!
 
IMHO, if it's mildew none of these cleaners will do as good of a job as a strong bleach solution will. That's free, I'd try that first and see if it helps. Alternatively you could buy the Griot's. If it doesn't work, send it back.

Shouldn't you know if your rubber cleaner will remove mildew? or were you being sarcastic when you made that reply?
 
Griots rubber cleaner works great! I use it on my tires and my rubber garbage cans. I know Griots doesnt get much respect on this board , but this is a product that really works great just like there Interior cleaner

Maybe you misunderstood - I really wasn't being sarcastic at all. A soap based cleaner like ours will not remove mold and mildew (it's designed to remove embedded dirt). However, if you agitate it with a brush, some will be removed, but that's more a function of the brush agitation than the cleaner.



I just didn't want you to assume the partial removal of the mold and/or mildew was due to the product.

Mantic6t9, in my day job -- when I'm not occupied with Autopia ;) -- I work in the field of library/archives conservation, and we deal with a lot of mold and mildew. One of our common DIY solutions for folks with moldy books is to just expose them to sunshine, because the ultraviolet radiation in sunlight will make mold/mildew go dormant, after which (especially on inorganic substates like car rubber), the mold/mildew spores will just brush off. So ... now that I've had some more time to think about your quandary ... I'm wondering: (1) Is the affected area being exposed to sunlight? and (2) If sunlight isn't reducing the problem, are you really sure it's mold and not something else? :confused: What are you seeing that makes you think it's mold, and not just wax residue or some other problem?
 
Well i'll try and take a pic for you guys and post it up tomorrow if it isn't raining.



Lynn, I know it's not wax. The car has never been waxed as long as she has had it. I can scrape this suff and it just kinda smears around.

But if it's mold, you'll find that sunlight will kill the mold. Or is it garaged?

Cal – welcome to Autopia. Autoglym products IMO are often overlooked because they are sold by Halfords etc as opposed to upscale stores

VetteVert. How did the Klasse work on your tires? I am looking for something that repels dirt and dust. Will dry to the touch and not greasy so dirt doesn't stick to it on a country road.

Ah, well I guess that's why it suds up slightly too. I wonder if this product has a lot in common with #39, which also seems like just a strong soap to me... :nixweiss





Could the "mold" be some kind of moss, like the kind you find growing on the sides of trees? Or am I wrong and that IS mold growing on the sides of trees.... :p I don't know, it's some kind of plant-like coating that forms on surfaces when left outside for a very long time and exposed to water....
 
I've actually never used it on the tires. It isn't tacky like some of the other sprays/gels, so it might work well for dusty conditions. I've only used it on interiors, but I'll have to give the tires a try......sometime.....calling for 8-14" of snow today :(

Hey guys sorry i havn't got the pics of the "mold" i'm talking about. I'll try tomorrow if i can remember. I've been away from Autopia for a week or so, it's time to become addicted once again :)
 
my daughter's car had trim with black spots on it, I assumed it was mold, but did not want to try bleach on the trim/paint.



After no luck with full strength Simple Green, AIO, vinegar and regular car soap (all applie with a toothbrush), I finally found the answer.............................



Scratch X!!! It got off about 90% of the spots after two applications with an old piece of cheese cloth. Followed it up with AIO, it looks great!



No pixs, sorry, I took 5 pixs, none of them really show the problem well.........
