I Need A Brush.....

with the following characteristics:

1) Moderately firm bristles, stiff is OK too.

2) Must be able to squeeze into a 3/4" opening (rim to rotor clearance)

3) Must be long enough to reach the inside of a wheel.

4) Must be rigid enough that pressure on the handle transfers to the bristles rather than bending the shaft.

What I'm trying to describe here is a long, narrow, heavy duty bottle brush type thing. Does such a brush even exist?

I see quite a few neglected wheels; but I MUCH prefer non-acid wheel cleaners. I want to be able to agitate the inner rims easily.

Thanks! Mikeman

Thanks, Truzoom, but Oxo failed the test. The stiff brisles at the tip are too big in diameter, and the shaft is not rigid enough. Also, the wires are not very well attached to the handle. Mine broke right out of the handle. I'm not very happy with Oxo right now. :D

I have found this brush, by Mequires http://www.detailsupplydepot.com/sc...UST++&password=&sesid=0913152428&id=MIR+X1160

to do a very nice job behind the spokes of my Z06 wheels. I haven't experienced any bending and the pressure applied to the handle transfers to the end of the brush. Does a nice job......Tom

I've been looking at pics of the Meguiar's brush. Will it squeeze between the rotor and the inner rim? The bristles would need to be rather soft to do so. Thanks for the replies!

Yep, I have no trouble getting between the rotor and rim on the rear of the car. The front is a little tight, I suspect it would be for any brush as it's a narrow space on the vette. I prefer to use a low profile jack at the front and just spin the wheel as to insist that the brush make the fit. The Mequiars brush seems very hardy, but I think I get a better job by rotating the wheel first and don't risk messing up the brush..........Tom :bigups

Correction:

Made a mistake. The brush fit great all the way around between rotor and rim. The tight spot I referred to above is between the caliper and the rim, so only slight rotation of the wheel is necessary to do that part of the rim. I end up with nice shiney rims behind the spokes!

You might also check out the EZ Motorcycle detailing brush at TOL. It won't fit between the rim and the rotors on the S8, but it does on my other vehicles. Not that I'd use it on the S8's wheels anyhow.

When the rotor/rim clearance is really tight, as in- nothing will fit between them, I just move the vehicle half a wheel rotation.

Take a look at the wheel brake dust brushes (3-pack for $9) that Griot's Garage sells, I use them on my STi and they work great for me.

Another vote for the Meguiar's spoke brush. It works great although it does fail your test in that it is made to be bent if needed. It is still pretty ridgid but you would have to check one out to be sure if it was right for you. I love mine.

I just bought the Meguiars brush and used it for the first time this weekend on my SL55 AMG. Other products that I tried would not fit between the 8 piston calipers on the front and the rim. This one did fit and cleaned the inner rim better that anything that I have ever used. :up :up :up

Hey, this is great! Thanks for all the help guys. I think I'll get both the Meg's and the TOL motorcycle brush. I've been fighting inner rims for months now. I'm going to squash this problem once and for all. Bring on those trashed wheels!

Exile,

I believe the small picture in your first post, just above your signature is causing an MSN Passport popup window. It is EXTREMELY annoying. Please remove it.

This is what I get when I check the properties of your "picture":
