I`m not getting an Alexa now

I guess these things are great toys for people who are lazy and have too much money, but I`ve never really understood the point. Must be the dinosaur in me.

The only automation I have in my house is a Nest thermostat and I have difficulty using it. It is supposed to learn my habits, but never seems to know it’s hot in the house. Maybe I need Alexa to tell my thermostat to turn on. Lol.

Every once in awhile “Siri” starts asking questions from my pocket. Trust me I don’t say anything remotely close to “Siri” to wake her either.

BTW, I believe Law Enforcement has been looking into getting search warrant for those devices to listen for conversations relating to criminal activity. So, the tin foil hat may be necessary. As in black tin foil over your phone and “smart” devices:)

They claim they don’t listen but the natural cynic in me says that they hear every word you say and adjust their marketing towards you accordingly.

I worry more about google knowledge of my search history.

Noting like that for us, ever. Period. But then I won`t have a smartphone either. Life`s..[sufficiently what it is]... without inviting in additional potential trouble.

[sarcasm] Gee, what could possibly go wrong?"[/sarcasm]

Talk with the people who, uhm...can`t say much about what they do at their tax-$-funded work ...about what is/isn`t "being paranoid" in this context and you might decide that you *can`t be* genuinely paranoid, but you sure can be oblivious.

Accumulator, as a wise man once said, it isn`t paranoia if everybody really is out to get you. Sincere congrats on avoiding the smartphone craze - you have a brother and sister here and there ain`t many of us left. We have an OLD dumb phone which is still smarter than us. It comes off the wall charger maybe once a year, which is as often as we use a cellphone. Not being called in the car or restaurant has never affected my quality of life. My way of protesting.

E-Jag- Yes indeed, we`re on the same page. And a lot of victims didn`t know somebody was out to get them until after it happened. I won`t even question people who (try to) only pay cash for stuff or avoid online vendors; I dunno what their concerns oughta be any more than they know from mine.

I did insist that Accumulatorette upgrade her cell to one with a camera, just as a Personal Security measure.

I will allow that many of my IRL friends would simply lose their jobs if they did it that way, and though I`m tempted to say "it`s a choice", well...easy for me to talk when I`m not in their shoes.

But this whole "invite who-knows-whom into every aspect of your life" stuff just strikes me as, uhm... [ill-advised].

I haven`t even had a cell phone in more than a decade. When people quit using cell phones to talk on , and just wanted to text or surf. I gave up on that whole thing. I have one I keep in the car that isn`t activated. So if I needed to call 911 I can. My I pad is as connected as I get. I have no need for everything to be automated in my life. No Facebook, twitter, just a few car forums that`s it for me.

Coleroad, I hear you, except that I don`t know what an Ipad is. I seem not to be suffering. There may be more of us than I thought. That, or the few of us are just all autopians. Nonetheless, glad to have you around.

E-Jag- To our great surprise, my wife and I both use our iPads A LOT. Never woulda thunk it, but well....they just do some stuff better than our (admittedly very old) PCs.

But then I`m not playing games or looking at cute videos or anything like that. Always post here with the PC and this is the only Detailing-related site I ever visit unless ordering stuff.

I’m with you on everything but the cell phone.

I need mine. Work, friends Kids.
