I love Simple Green (pics)

I bought some used rims to put my snow/winter tires on, and they were EXTREMELY filthy...like, baked on brake dust that wont come off even scrubbing with A2Z, they just wouldnt come clean.



This pic is after i A2Z'd them, then washed with gold class.

They wouldnt clean..as i said. :scared :shocked



Now, i sprayed some Simple Green, straight up, on to them, and let it sit for about 45 seconds. After just wiping down with an old MF, this is what they looked like:

Oh yeah...I then went over them some some Klasse, for protection, but it didnt really change the way they looked, so i didnt take a pic.
 
Some people say simple green will damage your rims. I've been useing it for years now and havn't had a problem. Just letting you know it may or may not damage certain rims.

I learned THE HARD WAY that Simple Green etches and destroys the clear coat on aluminum wheels. SG dulled and destroyed the clear coat on my 1991 Nissan 300ZX years ago. Never again.



Also, notice the white corrosive layer it leaves on unpainted aluminum engine parts.



Not worth the risk, IMO. There are far safer products for cleaning wheels.
 
They are old Probe wheels. :up :D . They were cheaper, and more available then the stock ones, and look relatively the same as stock.



I really dont care about the finish on them, as they are winter rims. The thought crossed my mind, but once again...i dont care about the finish, i just wanted them clean. :nixweiss
 
I use Orange Blast instead of Simple Green to good effect. I also use it on the tires to take off Meguiar's Endurance when it starts building up a greasy film.

I wouldn't use Simple Green as a day-to-day cleaner, but it looks like it filled the bill as a last resort . . .



I'm curious: for those that have seen clearcoat damage from Simple Green, was it after a single use, or damage over time?

This was a one time deal guys, im not using it every time i wash, and i was well aware of the damage it COULD have caused, but i didnt care because they are winter rims, and are meant to get dirty :p .



Thanks for the concern though, and i guess people reading this, wanting to do it on their REAL rims, might think twice now.

I use watered down simple green in the wheel wells, engine bay and for tyres etc.



Previously, I used to use CD2 engine cleaner in the arches and it took away some of the underseal :eek: SG is very mild and cleans without stripping stuff :xyxthumbs



Remember SG is water-based and environmentally friendly :cool:

No, you've got to give it a chance to work its destruction...perhaps 6 months.



A friend had a new GTI and he thought the Simple Green was an appropriate wheel cleaner and I could not politely hint otherwise. His silver wheels turned gold during the course of the winter season. It was very unusual and quite unsightly. :down

Nick, are you serious? Dude, even dilluted Simple Green will strip paint in an engine bay and tarnish clear coat wheels. My old man had that on his M3. Again on his 400SL



What's a safe but effective way to clean your engine bay without the damaging side effects of Simple green? Idea?

Yep, he's tucked behind the stuff in my trunk. He took extra training to be able to shift weight correctly and manage not to spill any of my detailing supplies. And he had to have a refresher course when I mounted the Prodrive springs. Of course, he now demands extra beer and pizza because he thinks he's a "specialist" trunk monkey.



I threatened to cut him off from decent ale and only feed him Schlitz and Pabst if he didn't get with the program. He told me to stuff it and to keep up the good brew or he'd throw his weight the wrong way during a corner on a snowy day.



Stupid monkey.



<sigh> I wonder if I can find Guiness on sale anywhere . . .
