I have a virus.

I found a thread in Bleeping Computer that has saved me. This is what I have.

Remove System Check (Uninstall Guide)


I ran Spybot after Avast!, and it found another 6 threats for me to delete. MalwareBytes is running now and has found 2 infections thus far, SuperAntiSpyware is going right now as well and has found 577 threats! Thankfully RKill and TDSSKiller came back clean.

And you're right about doing more frequent back-ups, the last one I did was 6 months ago. :(

Coming from an IT professional here, image level backups can save your ass. My parents got a nasty anti-virus malware that was so deep into the system rolling back to a known good snapshot of the system was the only way to get rid of it (short of reformat).

I install Acronis True Image home on all my systems and back them up to a central NAS appliance. Then I replicate to an off site location.
 
I agree. I have Acronis True Image Home and love it. Your offsite backup is a nice extra. I just installed a 2nd hard drive in my case and backup to it. Works great as long as the house doesn't blow away on burn down.

2 different types of medium
1 copy off site

and it must be automated with no user input required.

Bill, I have no clue what any of that means. That's why I envy you IT guys! Is that Carbonite service worth a damn?

Yup! I had it all squared away around noon yesterday. Faster than ever now! Finished doing a back-up onto a disc and to my external.

I was ready to take ax to my PC a while ago .:chop

Nightmare PC problems for me starting Christmas eve I got more then a dozen trojans in one day,I didnt think that was even possible.I didnt even go anywhere bad. All from looking at e-card websites.

Nothing but problems since.

Hope fully Im all good now .Cox cable came out and fixed a bunch of the connections , after I already spent 150.00 on my PC getting it fixed and it was Cox all along!:rant:
I seriously was thinking about not owning a PC anymore!If this one dies I may just decide to get along without one .

I really need to backup what little I have on my laptop. Seems to be running slower the past week.


I wonder how good those office supply places like Staples and Office Depot are… I get free tune up coupons all the time. Wonder if they can speed up my laptop

Do not want to start or hijack this but was your version of Avast, Free or Paid Version ? There are alot of anti-virus programs out there that are not that good at protecting your computer. Some will catch problems better than others. A good anti-virus with updates and a firewall will provide alot of protect. Back ups are life savers. (IMO) My experience with anti-virus has me using Avira and F-Secure. They use less system resources than others. Avira is better than AVG, AVG is better than Avast, etc.

I used to use AVG and Avira but have since switched over to Microsoft Security Essentials for all my computers. The newer versions of AVG and Avira seem to more bundled with other junk and cause my PC to slow. MS Security Essentials is great. I have been using it for about 6 months without any issues.
 
I use Emsisoft and have never had virus issues.

The FREE stuff is just that, FREE, and in most cases, ineffective where the big boys play.

I have setup Carbonite on a few systems, but there are some reports of bad customer service. I have mixed feelings on it, I think it could be a really good solution depending on your needs. When I tested it I had trouble with it not backing up my data in a reasonable time frame ... what I learned is that after 200GB they throttle down your connection. In my testing I couldn't get 500GB of data to backup within the free trial period so I ditched it and built my own solution.

That is good to know. One more thing to pick your brain about at DF along with photography. I think I will be buying you lots of beer!

In the past I have run a "System Restore" to put the computer to a previous state before the virus infection. Go into Safe Mode then restore it. Once it completes you need to run those virus scans to ensure they are not still lingering. That is usually the quick fix. But occasionally there are viruses that still run when a restore is done, or if they are really malicious they will make it so the system restore won't even run.
