I have a new fav QD .....

What QD's are your favorite?

I guess I have four "staple favorites", though I'm not dissatisfied with a few others (some of which I think are out of production) that I'm gradually using up. The ones I'll keep reordering are:

-Griot's Speeshine on waxes

-FK425 on sealants

-FK146 on sealants, mainly on imperfect finishes or when I need cleaning (e.g., brake rotor rust on wheels post-wash) or when I don't want the "FK425 look"

-AI/VG Fast Finish on black stuff (metal/plastics/rubber/etc.)

The above are utterly Accumulator-proof, as long as I use them as described; I can run into issues if I use them differently though (e.g., FK425 on fresh wax). I know a few people have had a few issues with FK425 (heat, humidity-related? note I have a climate-controlled environment) but other than messing up some Collinite once it's never bitten me.

Now I'm not *opposed* to using something else, but I'd sure hate to buy something only to find that it's somehow inferior (that'd just be IMO of course) to what I'm using now. I'm pretty much 100% satisfied with those four, as in "how could anything be better?!?" so I might be a hard sale when it comes to something else.

Accumulator, OID is a safe stuff. Accumulator-proof. It can smear when the dilution is too strong, but when it happens, just add water to it. If the local water doesn't play nice with the concentrate, stretch it to 4:1. Done.

That was my experience. If streaking was a pain, just add a bit more water, problem solved.

bert31 & Bence- What about OID would make me want to switch to it? And which of my current QDs would it replace?

If/when it smears (and I'd mix it up with either distilled or DI water), will the smearing just buff off (say...with another application of more-diluted OID) or is it an actual "gotta work at it" issue?

Heh heh, for some reason I seem to be tough to sell on Optimum stuff, though I was very happy with their OHC and OPC once I tried them.

I will be trying ONR and FK 425 and some others this week on almost half a dozen cars. From the reviews I have seen, I say probably ONR will outperform everything else.

While I really like the look 425 leaves, I think OID is better to be honest. It leave a very deep, wet, rich finish. I just really like it. Now Scott's comment about the new ONR leaving such a nice finish has me wondering if OID will be needed anymore. Hmmmmmmm.

Maybe all of them???? I have no idea, never tried Griot's or 146.

Just added a few ounces of water and going back over those spots with smears or streaks has always worked for me. I will say, once I got the hang of OID, I could use it at stronger dilutions and would not leave smears/streaks. You just sort of figure it out so to speak.

I am the opposite, their products always impress me. The wash is the best I have ever tried. It would be interesting to compare to Griot's which I know is your go to.

Tell you what, I will send you a sample bottle of OID if you return the bottle full of either Griot's wash or Griot's Speedshine. :)

Hmm.. my FK425 supply is going low, maybe I oughta try OID, but it's not like Im without a variety of QDS to choose from already.

You have PM!

Is it possible to have too many QDs?

No... not possible :)

Gee, everybody's being nice and generous with their offers of samples, but until I use up a few gallons of what I already have on-hand I'm just gonna keep asking questions and thinking about this stuff.

Yes. Heh heh, make that "empathetically *YES!*" :chuckle: I'm still using up QDs I bought before I moved into this house/shop and that was a dozen years ago! As it is, I think it's extreme/nutty that I choose between four go-to QDs, but I always have those specific reasons why one is just right for a given application.

bert31- Thanks for the good, detailed explanations! From what you posted, it sounds like the OID might be a substitute for the Griot's; the others (FK425, FK146, and AG FF) all have what I suspect are different attributes, at least the way I see 'em.

No one is being nice. They just want your address so we can see your collection from google maps. LOL.

Heh heh, now you're starting to think like I do :chuckle: :nervous:

Eh, the latest view they show doesn't have any of my cars in it though; the previous one had a white Caprice in the driveway so I could date it pretty specifically.

A product that is over looked is CG's HYBRID V7- Optical Select-High Gloss Spray Sealant & Detailer. Easy to use and you get a awesome shine.

What do you think of it compared to Z8?

The two best QD's I've used are Adams DS and Surf City's HRD. Both look great and are slick and streak-free. The only negative IMO is that both are pink in color, so they're not ideal for interior QD'ing.

Hot Rod Detailer is amazing, and so is Speed Demon! They do leave a VERY slick and streak-free finish. I'm out of both of them right now. I've considered buying some OID instead though based on my experience with OCW and Opti-Clean. Opti-Clean works well as a quick detailer when diluted as well.

Actually I have both fk425 & OID - I prefer the fk425 on my white car because it's pink in color and I can see where I sprayed the product - haha. IMO they are both great products and you won't go wrong with either. FWIW, my brother and I did a blind test between those two and Adams Detail Spray and neither one of us could see a difference between the three products. However, if scent is important I would urge you to try the AdamsPolishes Detail Spray. Simply wonderful and blows the other two out of the water in that area. If your looking at the cost of the product, OID wins hands down which matters on consumerables that get used on a high volume basis. Regarding looks, to my eyes difficult if not impossible to tell the difference between all three of these quality products.

Something smells better than FK425?!? Well, OK, M34 is right up there with it...but the OID is *better*? What does its scent remind you of?
