I guess this is what happens when the economy goes to the toilet..

This is something my wife just sent me. This hits WAY too close to home.

Well, my mom just called me...her and Scott got robbed at gunpoint last night at their house. They are both fine and they ended up catching all three of the guys involved. They went to MGM casino last night around 11:00pm. My mom ended up cashing out and winning $400 on a slot machine. Apparently these guys followed them all the way home from the casino. They got home around 3:00am. And two of the guys pulled guns on them in the driveway as they were walking into the house. They got $200 out of my mom's back pocket, and took Scott's wallet. Rockwood P.D. got right on their tale as they got onto 75. They exited though off onto Fort St. and ended up in a subdivision off Vreeland west of Allen. They got the driver right away, and the other two guys took off on foot. The police dogs were able to track one of them down, but not the other. But some lady ended up letting her dogs out into the yard where the other guy was hiding and chased him out of their yard, which alerted the police to him and they were able to get him too. So thankfully nobody was hurt, their both ok, and they arrested all three of the bastards. I can't believe this! I'm just so happy mom and Scott are both alright.

The toilet? I'm glad no one was hurt, but that sounds more like a robust economy (for someone) if they have money to burn in a casino.

This is south east Michigan..one of if not the worst economy in the US right now. My inlaws work and can do with their money what they want. My point is...when the economy drops the crime rate goes up in places you normally see no crime, like this community.

I guess I'm not understanding this...why is there normally no crime in this community? Because it is affluent? There is always crime in affluent communities, no matter what the economy, because there is always money there. If it's a working-class community that has no crime because everyone is working and looking out for each other, where is the crime coming from, outside the community? Or are you saying that people are now unemployed, and have turned to crime?

EDIT: I guess what I'm saying is following winners home from a casino seems to be a pretty good business model for a robber, I don't see what that has to do with the economy. If they followed them home from the supermarket, that might be different! :lol

What this has to do with the economy is that when the economy goes to the shitter crime rate goes up. Pretty simple economics. The economy goes down hill because this area became so dependent on the Big Three. Thousands of people lost jobs and can not find work. They resort to crime for money. I am not sure how your economy is where you are but like I said, this area has the worst. And crime is sky rocketing because of it.

Bummer! Happy to hear that everyone is alright. I agree, people do what they feel they need to do to survive. If there's no legitimate work, they turn to crime.

Most crimes are crimes of opportunity and greed, not economic necessity.

Glad they weren't hurt though, I got robbed at gunpoint when I was a shift manager at Jack in the Box and it wasn't a pleasant experience.

I can imagine. I wonder how many detailers here carry a concealed weapon? I was just thinking about this. Most probably deal in cash and it would be known they get paid at every job.

I won a $1000 in one shot in Atalntic City and noticed I was eyeballed by shady looking guys at Ceasars Palace. When I cashed it in for bills I asked to have security escort me to my car when I leave which they did even though I was with 3 other guys who were half in the bag from the free cocktails all night.

Funny thing is I gambled for 8 hours, lost money but on a whim played the last slot on the way out and won!

Seriously though, glad to hear everyone was ok. I can't think of many things scarier than to have a gun pointed at you by a lunatic.

I don't think the state of the economy has much to do with the decision to rob people! I mean look at the super wealthy who engage in serious acts of white collar crime in swindle thousands out their life savings like with Enron and those other folks. These people cause more harm than the scum bag that robs you of your wallet.

Yeah, it is always good to get an escort after winning but that only gets you to your car. I guess the best thing to do is keep your eyes on your rear view mirror.

United States Crime Rate

Sorry to hear of that, and I'm glad they are ok... could've been a lot worse.

Seeing as how they are sometimes around crime-ridden areas, you may want to talk to them about obtaining their concealed weapons permit, a handgun, and several firearm safety and training courses. Traveling in at least pairs, CHL holders can protect themselves against violent crimnals pretty effectively most of the time.

In the situation you described, there probably wasn't much to do, but some strategic planning in the future plus an awareness of one's surroundings can make the weapon effective.

Imagine if most law-abiding citizens carried personal handguns everywhere they went? What would happen to violent crime rates and the violent criminals who perpetrate these crimes?

Of course, most people don't even think of that and rather choose an option which disarms citizens, allowing only folks with ill intentions to have weapons and those who need to defend themselves without the means to do so. The police can do little to nothing to prevent these types of incidents. Plus remember, the disarming of a country's population has many dark precedents in history as far as where the government went next...

Exercise your right as an American, and don't just carry a weapon - be properly trained on how to use it. An untrained person carrying a weapon is dangerous - a trained individual carrying one is not.

The Concealed carry laws don't really favor the good guys. Here in GA, it probably wouldnt have been lawful to carry into the casino either (as it's against the law to carry in a place that serves alcoholic beverages). There are so many restrictions on where the good people can carry, but as you know, the bad guys dont really care either way. It's really quite frustrating; especially when you have obtained your firearms legally and have gone through the proper channels to get a CCL.

Sorry, I didnt mean to turn this into a gun law thread. Back on topic: It sucks that they had to endure that (especially for what seems like such a small amount of money), but I sure am glad that they came away unharmed. Their safety is worth a whole hell of a lot more than a couple hundred dollars. I sure am glad they got those SOB's too!

Edit: didnt see Paul's post. I agree about the good guys carrying a firearm.

Come on, that nation's capital has outlawed guns and there are no more gun related crimes in DC!:bolt
