I finally sold out...

Sounds like a great job to me. When I graduated from college I tried the 9-5 white coller desk job and I hated it. Believe it or not all I wanted to do was steam clean carpet like I did part time in college. So, I got a job with a reputable cleaning company and now they pay me good money to run a top of the line monster truck mount. I have enough time on the side to detail cars part time in my garage. I'm so happy and I could never imagine working at a desk again.

Good luck jngrbrdman! I think you are making a good decision and you are going to enjoy the hell out of that new job!

Matt

Good luck man. Sounds like you got it going on! Hope it is everything you want it to be. Rick

Wish I had the B*lls to do the same thing. Wife, 2 kids and breadwinner in the family, I could never afford to give up my job.

I’m in a similar boat. I’ve got a wife and one kid though. ;) I made this decision with my family in mind. I don’t look at any change that is going to be financially better for my family as a bad thing. Its not like my last job where I was out of town for a couple weeks a month. I’ll still be home at a normal time and I’ll be a hell of a lot happier than I am now. My wife is really supportive and she knows how much I have wanted this. We have been married for much of my detailing career and its all I’ve ever wanted to do. We even looked into starting my own business a couple of times, but weren’t ready to take the risk.

I guess I’m just tired of the white collar job. I grew up with a blue collar dad and all my jobs were out on a farm or at a chemical plant or something like that. I learned how to weld when I was 13 because my dad thought it was the best thing I could learn to make a living. It served me well for awhile, but that is really not very fun. Lol The law is really fun, but I feel ethically challenged at the firm I am at right now. I can’t work somewhere that doesn’t make changes where they need to be made when they are pointed out. This place doesn’t seem concerned about that anymore. Its time to find another job anyway. I’ll keep my eyes peeled for another job still, but detailing is where its at. :) Once classes start up again in the fall I’ll be even busier because I’m scheduled to teach a few classes next semester, but I’ll juggle that somehow. I’ll get all the sleep I need when I’m dead. ;) Teaching is what I know I have to do in order to be really happy. My dream job would be to teach detailing. ;) For now I’ll have the best of both worlds and try to find a way to merge them somehow. :bigups

Things have a way of working out - When I left California I had no job, not much money and living with my mother - I took a job at a computer store because I could not find anything in my field (Public Relations) in my home town. That got me recruited and moved to Columbus Ohio and it blew up from there. I now work for one of the biggest Tech firms making a pretty decent living (rhymes with Disco ;) )....never thought I would get here from there.

Anthony,

What a bold and brave move. I am proud of you, and by no means is it selling out. This could very well be the step that allows you to persue your detailing dreams. In a sense, I'm glad I didn't make it into law school, as I don't think I'd have an ounce of time to detail. OCDETAILS might just get the growth spurt you were looking for!

I still need to apply to law school. I got a 163 on my LSAT and I'm sure that gets me into the school I want. I was thinking about doing it online. There are several really good law schools that are entirely online that are based in California. They are the only state that can do online JD programs right now. We'll have to see. I've got the resources of the University of Utah law library if I need that, but we'll see. I could be a detailer who gives good legal advice. lol Jngrbrdman: Detailer at Law. :lol

Jngrbrdman,

Detailing 5 & 6 days a week, 8 to 10 hours a day is tough work, and can take it's toll. It can also take the "fun" out of it in a real hurry. However, it sounds like a decision you feel comfortable with.

I hope things work out well for you. Hopefully, you can get your own biz started after a while, and let someone else do the work! :D

Given our experiences with 4 different attorneys in recent years, there definitely is room for some that give good legal advice and do it in a timely manner.

Boss is right, it is tough work and it DOES take it's toll.

However, after being in the game for 28 years, all of it full time, sole proprietor, the only advice I would give anyone is to make damn sure you spend enough time with your family, (vacations, etc). Owning and working full time in a service oriented business can become all consuming (especially if you have commercial accounts), and at the risk of sounding like a whiner I'll tell you that there was a period of time that I didn't take a vacation for 7 years!! THAT WAS REDICULOUS, but was my choice. It cost me to, in more ways than one.

Other than that I wouldn't change a thing. The earning potential in this biz can be very very good. :)

Hmmm---- If I remember right, our 16th President was a laywer and I BELIEVE the story goes "he never attended law school." ;) Then again, there are many who are still waiting for their 40 acres and a mule :-p hehehe

As long as every thing will be ok I am happy for you Jngrbrdman. Sounds like you will be real busy but happy.

Kudos to you for taking this step!!!

LOL I saw a bottle of NuFinish on their shelf and thought about you. lol I don't think they use it, but they had it.

Anthony,
I leave you alone for a week and you go and make a decision like this!!! :) Wow, congratualations!!!! I'm sooooo jealous. Plan on a visit friday if you're not busy, I gotta hear this from your own lips!!!!

Boy, I need to find me a job like that now. :) You know, you and I should have just started our own detailing business, what were you thinking!!!!!

No, seriously, CONGRATULATIONS ANTHONY!!!!!!

Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think you are doing the right thing. If I remember right from a previous post your child was young. It's better to make a career change now then when they are 7 or 8. IMO I think if you are happier doing what you love, then your family won't feel the stress or tension from a job that you no longer like doing. I think it will lead to a better family life when your not burned out on your old job. I think its great and congratulations.
